Born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien in London, England, Dusty Springfield became one of the most celebrated pop and soul singers of the 1960s and beyond. Her rich, emotive voice and impeccable taste made her a towering figure in British pop, with hits like Son of a Preacher Man, You Don't Have to Say You Love Me, and I Only Want to Be with You. Her 1969 album Dusty in Memphis is widely regarded as one of the greatest records ever made and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. She was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. Ma Rainey (1886–1939)
Often called the "Mother of the Blues," Gertrude "Ma" Rainey was one of the earliest professional blues singers and among the first to record the genre. Her powerful voice and commanding stage presence influenced generations of musicians, including Bessie Smith. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 1983. Rainey's bisexuality is considered well established historically; she was even arrested in 1925 following an incident at a gathering of women at her home, and her songs such as Prove It on Me Blues are widely read as direct expressions of same-sex desire.

Born in Peru, Indiana, Porter became one of the most sophisticated and witty composers and lyricists of the American songbook. His Broadway musicals, including Anything Goes and Kiss Me, Kate, produced enduring standards like Night and Day, I've Got You Under My Skin, and Anything Goes. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters in American history. Chavela Vargas (1919–2012)
Born in Costa Rica and adopted by Mexico as a national treasure, Vargas was one of the most beloved ranchera singers of the 20th century. Her raw, unadorned vocal style and emotional intensity made her an icon throughout Latin America. She experienced a remarkable late-career revival in the 1990s, performing to sold-out audiences into her eighties.
