Faithful Teachings

For the third year in a row, I had the incredible privilege of co-leading a medical service trip to Costa Rica through Faithful Teachings Inc., the nonprofit I founded with a mission to educate, empower, and extend hope. A special shoutout to David Cimbora and Kari Sandau for sharing the leadership challenge and helping serve 432 people in 9 days.

Each trip is a reminder that servant leadership is not about titles or recognition—it’s about showing up with humility, compassion, and the willingness to serve others first. Whether it’s translating for a patient, offering a listening ear, or supporting medical professionals as they care for underserved communities, every act of service becomes a seed of healing.

This work continues to shape me in deep existential ways. It deepens my purpose, renews my faith in humanity, and reminds me why I lead—not for myself, but for the impact it has on others.

Grateful to our amazing team (made up of Physicial Assistants, Nurses, Physical Therapists, Ocupational Therapists, and faculty), generous partners (George Fox University, Samford University, Fresno Pacific University, The Salvation Army Costa Rica), and the resilient communities we are honored to walk alongside.

Here’s to purpose-driven leadership—rooted in service and committed to change.

Today’s all-day meeting was beyond productive. Louie Chong () shared a timely devotional. Lester Larios gave an overview of the organization to our new volunteers. We heard encouraging testimonies from team members in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. And we ended our day with Dr. Hernandez () facilitating a conversation around gaining greater clarity on who we are as an organization and where we are heading. Needless to say - we left encouraged, inspired, and filled with hope about the future.

Groups of students in Costa Rica and Nicaragua continue to take part in the courses Faithful Teachings offers. This month is always filled with excitement as the students get to the finish line and celebrate their accomplishments with their churches and families.

Day 6: Success for any service trip does not rest on numbers. Success is defined by serving those in need. We drove for 5 hours to a site in San Isidro del General (a.k.a. Perez Zeledón) to serve 12 adults with disabilities and the staff that takes care of them. During our time, we heard their stories, provided medical and psychological services, and prayed with them.

Día 6: El éxito de cualquier viaje de servicio no se basa en números. El éxito se define por el servicio que se brinda a los necesitados. Manejamos por 5 horas a un sitio en San Isidro del General (también conocido como Pérez Zeledón) para atender a 12 adultos con discapacidad y el personal que los atiende. Durante nuestro tiempo, escuchamos sus historias, brindamos servicios médicos y psicológicos y oramos con ellos.

Day 5: The team drove to Leon XIII to provide medical services to a site with over 100 kids. This site is located in a tough neighborhood, which has greatly impacted the way these children are being raised. The kids have seen, experienced, and dealt with a lot of violence, drugs, and negative family dynamics. This is why it was such a blessing for the team to be able to care for them, provide medical and psychological services, and whenever possible, do something that brought out their beautiful smiles.

Día 5: El equipo viajó a León XIII para brindar servicios médicos a un sitio con más de 100 niños. Este sitio está ubicado en un vecindario difícil, lo que ha tenido un gran impacto en la forma en que se crían estos niños. Los niños han visto, experimentado y lidiado con mucha violencia, dr**as y dinámicas familiares negativas. Es por eso que fue una gran bendición para el equipo poder cuidarlos, brindarles servicios médicos y psicológicos y, siempre que fuera posible, hacer algo que hiciera los niños mostraran sus hermosas sonrisas.

Days 3-4: For two days, faith and the sciences locked arms to bring healing to dozens of people in need. Our team partnered with pastors and faith leaders to serve people in Llano de Los Ángeles and Santa Teresita de Aserrí. We prayed, worshipped, and provided physical, psychological, and pastoral support. We were an instrument in the hands of a great and caring God.

Días 3-4: Durante dos días, la fe y las ciencias se unieron para traer sanidad a decenas de personas necesitadas. Nuestro equipo se asoció con pastores y líderes religiosos para servir a las personas en Llano de Los Ángeles y Santa Teresita de Aserrí. Oramos, adoramos y brindamos apoyo físico, psicológico y pastoral. Éramos un instrumento en las manos de un Dios grande y bondadoso.

Day two: Today we were at El Refugio Salvation Army and saw a palpable, and sometimes critical, need. The team served families that were making their way to the North from various Latin American countries. While a small only a small dent in such great need, our hope is that each person and family felt served by each team member.

Día dos: Hoy estuvimos en El Refugio, un sitio del Ejército de Salvación, y vimos una necesidad palpable, ya veces crítica. El equipo sirvió a familias que se dirigían al norte desde varios países de América Latina. Si bien es solo una pequeña ayuda en una necesidad tan grande, nuestra esperanza es que cada persona y familia se haya sentido atendida por cada miembro del equipo.

Day one of our medical service trip is in the books! The team provided much needed medical services to kids, youth, mothers, and the staff at Salvation Army Nursery in San José. A very successful way to start this 10-day service trip!

The itinerary for our upcoming (May 10-20) medical service trip has been finalized. To make this service trip a reality, we’ve partnered with George Fox University, Salvation Army Costa Rica, and Senda Antigua. We will serve various communities, including kids and their mothers, adults in transition (heading north), adults with disabilities, and church pastors and their congregations. God has truly orchestrated every step of the way.

Para hacer realidad este viaje de servicio, nos hemos asociado con la Universidad George Fox, el Ejército de Salvación de Costa Rica y Senda Antigua. Serviremos a varias comunidades, incluidos niños y sus madres, adultos en transición (hacia el norte), adultos con discapacidades y pastores de iglesias y sus congregaciones.
