As a first-day tradition at CIS, students randomly selected the House they’ll call home for their time at CIS this past Wednesday! Our 5th and 6th graders excitedly welcomed their new 4th grade House members, along with students who are new to our school.

We also kicked off the year with a little extra excitement by giving away two $50 Walmart gift cards! These giveaways are made possible by the money we raise through our House fundraisers throughout the school year, allowing us to give back to our students and make our House events even more special. Thank you to everyone who supports our fundraisers and helps make moments like these possible!

And a big shoutout to Efikas, who brought the energy and earned the Spirit Stick following Wednesday’s House assembly!

Then on Friday, it was time for our first House Games event of the year! We kicked things off with 10 rounds of Rapid Fire Volleyball—and it definitely lived up to its name! The gym was LOUD, the games were fast, and things were just the right amount of chaotic. Most importantly, our students and staff had an absolute blast!

Our House system is one of the many ways we build community, friendships, school spirit, and a sense of belonging at CIS. Students across grade levels get the chance to cheer each other on, work together, and make connections beyond their classrooms.

And apparently, Efikas wasn’t finished! They once again brought the spirit during Rapid Fire Volleyball and earned the Spirit Stick for the second House event in a row!

If the energy in the gym this week was any indication, we’re in for a GREAT year at CIS!

Teacher Spotlight 🌟

Mrs. Bahe began teaching in 2007, making this her 19th year of teaching! Mrs. Bahe loves in Corydon with her husband, Adam, and three daughters. Her oldest, Maddie, will be a senior this year, followed by Erin, who will be a freshman, and Rachel, who will be in 5th grade at CIS. Mrs. Bahe's family loves animals. They currently have 3 dogs (Pawley, Rockie, and Charlie), 3 cats (Muffin, Opal, and Otis), and a 3-year-old goldfish named Skibiddy.

Mrs. Bahe knows she was meant to be a teacher because she feels she is the best version of herself when in the classroom. She believes in the power of creating beautiful, safe, and comforting environments that encourage healthy communication, conflict resolution, and other social-emotional skills. Mrs. Bahe feels strongly that if students strengthen their social and emotional skills, they will be more engaged in learning and willing to take on academic challenges.

Mrs. Bahe loves CIS because the teachers support one another and lift each other up. She loves being on the HOUSE committee and working with the team to build school spirit, inclusivity, and community through fun and meaningful activities!

Teacher Spotlight 🌟

Mr. Melhiser is beginning his 25th year in education and his seventh year teaching 5th grade. He joined the CIS family in December 2024 and is excited to continue building relationships with students and staff.

Originally from New Albany, he now lives in his childhood home, which he purchased in a historic neighborhood in 2016. Outside of school, Mr. Melhiser enjoys cooking, following sports, traveling—especially to the beach—and learning about history. He is a devoted fan of the Louisville Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Indianapolis Colts, and even shares his passion for cooking through his YouTube channel, which has grown to more than 700 subscribers. He also has a Rough Collie named Vinny.

This school feels like home to Mr. Melhiser because the staff are always so helpful and a joy to work with each day. He loves building meaningful connections with his students and strives to make his classroom feel like a home away from home for everyone who walks through the door.

Teacher Spotlight 🌟

Mrs. Whittaker will be starting her 24th year in education and her 23rd year at Corydon Intermediate School. During her teaching career, she has taught 6th grade science for 18 years, spent one year teaching 8th grade science at Corydon Junior High, and taught 5th grade for four years. Over the years, she has taught more than 2,000 students, and one of her favorite parts of being a teacher is running into former students in the community and catching up on their lives long after they’ve left her classroom.

Mrs. Whittaker and her husband, Trevor, are lifelong Harrison County residents, affectionately referred to by friends as “one zip-coders.” They have two children, Hunter (23) and Hope (20), as well as four cats. In her free time, she enjoys meeting new people, traveling and exploring new places, spending time with family and friends, and going to the movies.

This school feels like home to Mrs. Whittaker because CIS has truly been her second home for nearly half of her life. The building and the people have supported her through both life’s celebrations and challenges, and the friendships she has made here are ones she will always cherish.

Teacher Spotlight 🌟

Mrs. Ground is beginning her 28th year of teaching and her 18th year at Corydon Intermediate School. She is starting her 20th year teaching 4th grade after previously teaching grades 1–4, and she says 4th grade is her favorite. One of the highlights of her school year is teaching Indiana History. She loves watching students get excited as they connect their own community to the state’s history, learn about the Indy 500, discover famous Hoosiers, and explore all that makes Indiana unique.

Mrs. Ground and her husband, Tim, have two college-aged daughters. As a family, they enjoy watching college and professional sports, especially cheering on Indiana-based teams like the Hoosiers, Fighting Irish, Colts, Pacers, and Fever. They also enjoy supporting the University of Cincinnati and love traveling together to experience new places and everything that makes each destination special.

When asked why CIS feels like home, Mrs. Ground shared that it’s because of the caring students and staff who are always willing to support one another. She appreciates being part of a school where teachers are dedicated not only to helping students learn but also to making school fun through engaging classroom activities, celebrations, and House events. It’s the sense of community and teamwork that makes CIS feel like home.
