It's that time of year again, time for OSU's annual Empty Bowls benefit!

It’s here! OSU Empty Bowls is back for our 19th annual benefit!

This year, we’re hosting a hybrid-style benefit, with an online auction (March 3-8) and in-person meal (March 8). This event supports our campus food pantry and SNAP match at area farmers’ markets and is made possible thanks to the hard work of both OSU Ecampus and Corvallis-based students.

This year’s tasting event features Nasi Lemak, considered the national dish of Malaysia; Momo, a steamed filled dumpling from Nepal; Chinese vinegar potatoes; and Kheer, a dessert from Southern India.

Book Talk - The Taste of Water

Have you ever wondered why your tap water tastes the way it does? Come explore how tastes have been increasingly erased from drinking water over the twentieth century as Dr. Christy Spackman discusses her new book, The Taste of Water. Through examining the development of sensory expertise in the United States and France, in this talk Spackman will uncover how efforts to erase unwanted tastes and smells have transformed water into a highly industrialized food product largely divorced from its origins. Learn to question your own assumptions about what water does and should naturally taste like, as well as how extensive your own expertise is around water.

We want to draw your attention to SAFN’s Awards, which are all due March 31, 2024, this year. (This moves the deadline up from previous years, heads up!)

All SAFN Awards focus on supporting graduate and undergraduate students. As the future of our field, SAFN has always valued supporting their work.

SAFN membership is free for students, as long as they have a AAA membership.

In addition, if your university is a AAA DSP member, your undergraduate students gain one year of free membership to the AAA and thus, to SAFN.

AWARDS

The Student Research Award supports the research phase of an original project focused on food and nutritional anthropology. This award is focused on decolonized, ethical research on food justice and food sovereignty.

The Thomas Marchione Food-as-a-Human-Right Student Award supports research and writing that engages with food security and food sovereignty issues, honoring the legacy of Thomas Marchione.

The Christine Wilson Awards includes one award for undergraduate research papers and another award for graduate student research papers that examine topics within the perspectives of nutrition, food studies and anthropology.

Ten Rivers Food Web is busy expanding our programming and are searching for an intern (winter term) and student board member (January-June.)

Interns will work on two projects: our online local food directory and Big Bean Barn project. The directory will match our 3 county service area and will be launched in 2024 in partnership with Oregon Taste. The Big Bean Barn project aims to increase local bean and grain accessibility, production, and consumption in a way that supports farmers' needs and makes staple crops more affordable for consumers of all income levels.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- food producer outreach
- food producer survey response review and analysis
- participating in/conducting interviews of potential bean, brain and corn growers and buyers
- analysis of potential buyer and grower needs, constraints and ideas

Interns will work closely with the board vice president, Kirsten Miller. Our ideal candidate is both interested in and well-versed in local food systems, can execute tasks independently and wants to add their own perspective to the projects.

Student Board Members will help foster connections between OSU, LBCC, the student bodies, Ten Rivers Food Web and our greater community. If you feel comfortable speaking up about your unique point of view, opinions, and life experiences and would enjoy being a connector between your institution, spheres of influence, and Ten Rivers Food Web, we urge you to apply for this position. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month mostly on Zoom and sometimes in person in Corvallis. Position description found here.
