📍Class abroad in Malaysian Borneo

Travelers on June's "Oil Palms and Orangutans" trip spent two weeks immersed in the region's landscape, exploring orangutan rehabilitation centers, oil palm plantations and active conservation sites.

"My trip to Borneo was the opportunity of a lifetime," participant Michaella Kuykendall said. "For me, it was so interesting to see where agriculture and conservation meet in another country and climate. This trip was full of such diversity- the content, the ecosystems, and the opportunities."

Some things are hard to capture in a syllabus. Luckily, COF student Robyn Peterson-Zopf brought a camera. 🏔️🇨🇱

During last year’s spring break trip to Chile, “Parks and Protected Areas of Patagonia,” Robyn captured the adventure through her lens: new ecosystems, quiet moments and the wonder that comes with learning in a new part of the world.

“It is always intimidating to venture outside of your comfort zone,” she shared. “This trip taught me that the less people you know, the more friends you can make, and the less familiar you are with a place, the more you can learn from its culture, ecosystems and beauty.”

What if the debris left behind after a timber harvest could become the fuel that powers your car?

That's one of the questions driving Chukwuemeka Valentine Okolo, an applied economist pursuing his Ph.D. in OSU’s College of Forestry. Okolo and his team's research examines the entire supply chain for converting forest residues into renewable diesel and gasoline via pyrolysis, a process that heats organic material without oxygen to create usable fuels.

“My work looks at how to make these pathways viable from a cost and policy standpoint,” he said. “There’s a lot of potential, but it depends on how well we can align the economics with the technology.”
