This week at Coyle Outside - gourd containers and apple c***r pressing! Some students created gourd bottles just to fill them with apple c***r they pressed.

In Fall, our homeschool classes have a focus on harvest and preparing for Winter. In 1.0/2.0 classes, Kids are preserving apple c***r to share with their families during a final celebration and harvest meal - along with acorn pancakes and mushrooms after several field trips to the oak savannah and mountains. In Wildercraft, students are learning the ancestral skill of making cups, bowls, and bottles from gourds, and will use these to serve their meals. In all classes, students learn diligence and responsibility through fire craft to cook and preserve food.

Oregon Outdoor School - for Homeschool Kids!
This is a special opportunity for local/regional homeschooling and distance learning families to participate in the Oregon Outdoor School experience. For ages 10-14. Sept 15-17, 8:30AM-2:30PM.

Students will participate in rotating 'field studies' (outdoor hands on classrooms) such as canoeing, fishing, archery, fire, shelter building, navigation and first aid. Interested adult chaperone volunteers are desired - be in touch!

Located at the scenic Camp Whispering Winds. Shuttle van available daily to/from Corvallis at 8a returning at 3p!

Cattail Kids is open for Fall Registration!!

Cattail Kids is an adventure-based nature preschool. Each day, kids pack a wagon of their gear and go on magical adventures in the park - visiting climbing trees, river beaches, tree fort villages, each with a story to tell. Free play in nature is the stage for developing skills for life. Focuses include:

Personal Responsibility
- packing up backpack
- keeping track of personal items
- leaving places better than we found them

Social Skills
- kind choices and communication
- child-led conflict resolution
- taking turns
- ‘services’ such as passing out water bottles and backpacks to their peers

Bodily Awareness
- safe / coordinated climbing
- yielding to others on the trail
- dressing appropriately for weather and activities
- drinking water often

Strength Building
- Cattail Kids walk 1-2 miles each day, stopping for play, stories, wildlife sightings, and water breaks!
- Cattail kids carry logs and pull the wagon!

Our veteran toddler guide Vee (“Bumblebee”) invites toddlers into a world where every passerby is a friend to meet on their journey, every neck of the woods is their playground, and all weather is worth going outside for. She has a deep well of cheerful, playful energy in all weather and terrain, making her an excellent role model for kids who are just getting to know the woods.

Dive into foraging with forager and herbalist Logan Keister. Logan will lead a nature walk on August 30, guiding participants through seasonal available edibles and medicinals in the Alsea Falls area.

This class will change how you experience a walk in the woods - guided by a local expert who is available to answer questions on all things foraging!

Homeschool

Wilderschool 1.0 | Mondays & Tuesdays | 9am-2pm | Ages 6-10
Designed for families looking for a nature based, experiential approach to education. Participants will learn about science through natural exploration and survival skills lessons.

WilderCraft | Thursdays | 9am-3pm | Ages 8-14
Build. Cool. Stuff! What would you need to build to live comfortably outdoors? This class is designed to be student-led and experiential. Learn responsible tool use - with whittling, weaving, woodworking, and more! Now one hour longer!

Wilderschool 2.0 | Fridays | 9am-2pm | Ages 9-14
For youth 9+ who are ready to dive deeper into skills and curriculum development. We will deepen connections to the skills we teach and the world around us. Instructors will introduce compound skills, two monthly field trips, and regular guest instructors to incorporate additional skills development.

After School

Wildervillage | Friday Afterschool | 2pm-5:30pm
Join us as we create an immersive village in the woods during early release time on Fridays! Each week we add to our civilization - building shelters, creating firepits, going on expeditions to forage for resources to expand our village, developing a barter economy and trading resources, creating a map of the surrounding territory, and more!

Summer Foraging Walk with Logan Keister | Aug 30 | 9am-1pm | 16+
Dive into foraging with forager and herbalist Logan Keister. Logan will lead a nature walk, guiding participants throughout the walk on seasonal available edibles, mushrooms, and medicinals.

Family Mushroom Foraging - Mountain and Coast | Oct 17 & 18 | 9am-2pm | All Ages
On Saturday we harvest mushrooms in the mountains, and on Sunday we will harvest from the coast! Register for one or both days.

Its crawdad season! A highlight for these campers was a crawdad boil during their wilderness survival summer camp!

Oftentimes, memorable experiences are encountered spontaneously - not planned. Each camp is different; instructors are guided by student interest (i.e. crawdad catching) and adapt the survival curriculum to invite new experiences to childhood.

This summer we're teaching paracord survival bracelets in all our classes - throughout the week, these young campers were encouraged to dismantle their bracelets to use their paracord for creative applications - such as shelter, traps, and first-aid scenarios! Kids are encouraged to be resourceful, using their wit to make the most from their circumstances.

We’re consider it a true privilege to do this work and we're looking for like-minded folk who value sacrifice, prioritize childhood, and are dedicated to children and families. We have two jobs to fill - Outdoor School instructors to travel around Oregon to bring experiential outdoor education to public school students, and a manager position for our year-round wilderness school in Corvallis, Outschool.

What an incredible week of fishing at E. E. Wilson! Freshly-caught fish were roasted over an open flame… and kids had a feast!

These campers signed up for this summer camp last minute - it’s certain to say they’re glad they joined. Some campers made their very first catch. Thanks Huckleberry and Polar for a summer to remember.

It’s summer training week, and we can already tell we have a phenomenal team! Their summer adventure began this week at our headquarters, where staff have been camping out together, cooking shared meals, practicing skills, and planning new survival scenarios for the summer season.

They’re excited to share some new skills - bipod tarp shelters and pioneering structures - so kids can engineer free-standing tents, watchtowers, ladders, and elevated platforms!

If you’ll be joining us in the summer, you can expect to see some of these faces. All of them have proven this week to be highly committed, intentional, and caring guides. We can’t wait to hear stories from the adventures they lead!
