When it comes to protecting our brains from age-related decline or diseases like Alzheimer’s, early prevention is our best line of defense.

Dr. Kathy Magnusson and her research team are working to unlock the secrets to a longer cognitive healthspan. By studying a critical memory protein called the NMDA receptor, Dr. Magnusson is uncovering why our brains lose memory and flexibility as we age.

There may not be a “magic pill” yet, but the evidence shows that physical exercise, social activity, and eating a diet rich in whole foods like walnuts and blackberries can have meaningful impacts on your brain health.

Learn more about this research and what it means for healthspan in our latest Research Insider story, available in the comments.

Alzheimer's disease affects millions of families, yet many factors driving it remain poorly understood. We hope you’ll join us online this Wednesday Aug 19, at 11 am Pacific, for a free webinar on our latest research insights about Alzheimer’s and treatment possibilities.

In “Understanding Alzheimer's: From Basic Biology to Breakthrough Therapies”, Linus Pauling Institute researchers Drs. Alysia Vrailas-Mortimer and Nathan Mortimer will explore:

🔹 What Alzheimer's disease is and how scientists study it
🔹 How oxidative stress and brain inflammation may influence its progression
🔹 How antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and natural compounds are being studied as potential therapies

LPI Director Dr. Emily Ho will host the webinar, which includes a Q&A session with attendees. Registration is required for access -- check out the comments for the link to register. We hope to see you soon!

Balancing a full class schedule during the school year can leave very little time for undergrads to get hands-on experience inside a research lab.

That's a major reason why summer research opportunities are so valuable. We are proud to award our 2026 Summer Research Scholars Fellowships to three undergraduate students: Marissa Lane, Kylie Boor, and Madeline Bass.

This immersive program gives these ambitious Oregon State University students the rare opportunity to work full-time alongside an expert LPI faculty mentor. This summer, they're actively participating in cutting-edge research that supports our mission to promote optimal health and prevent chronic disease.

🎉 Congratulations Marissa, Kylie, and Madeline!

From sleep support to heart health, magnesium is one of the most talked about minerals today. But how much of what we read online is backed by real science?

Our Micronutrient Information Center recently released a rigorously reviewed update on magnesium to help you make informed decisions about your health.

Our updated resource breaks down how magnesium impacts cardiovascular health, diabetes prevention, and pregnancy safety based on the latest human clinical trials.

Learn more in our Research Insider article about the update via the link in the comments. Want more? Subscribe to the Research Insider for ongoing updates.

When you support student fellowships at our Institute, your impact reaches far beyond our campus walls.

We are proud to spotlight two of our 2026-2027 Student Research Fellowship awardees, Sima Ziyaee and Daniel Simchuk. Using flexible travel funds awarded by the Institute, both students recently traveled to the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS)'s annual conference. Mass spectrometry is an advanced laboratory technology critical to our ongoing nutrition and metabolic research.

Stepping onto a national stage to present data, receive peer feedback, and network with leading global experts is an important experience for early-career scientists. Sima reached out to share how much the experience energized her work, noting that face-to-face discussions with pioneers in her field have already brought fresh perspectives to her dissertation research back home.

Opportunities like these are made possible through competitive, donor-supported institutional funds. Please join us in celebrating Sima and Daniel's hard work and dedication!

We’re pleased to share the latest research from the Dr. Fred Stevens lab!

Their Phase 2 clinical trial found that xanthohumol, a natural compound from hops, moved patients with active Crohn's disease into remission within 4 weeks, with no adverse effects.

🔎 Check it out in the latest Molecular Nutrition & Food Research: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/mnfr.70501

Shout out to College of Health - Oregon State University and LPI alum Paige Jamieson for her work on this exciting research!
