That’s a wrap on STEM at Sea-Oregon 2026! Our Associate Director of Education Tracy Crews took students from Newport High School, Chemawa Indian School, Oregon Coast Community College, and Oregon State University on research cruises aboard the R/V Pacific Storm to get hands-on experience in marine science.

Working alongside scientists from College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences - Oregon State University and the Marine Mammal Institute - Oregon State University, students tracked blue whales, sorted box core samples from the seafloor, and supported monitoring at the PacWave test site. They used real research tools, including drones and a hydrophone built by a high school intern at OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center. The season ended on a high note! Our final cruise last week set a new STEM-at-Sea record with 18 box cores completed in a single trip.

Dear boaters: thank you for using Clean Vessel Act-funded boat waste collection facilities! Your actions help keep Oregon waters clean and safe for all! Hardworking staff at marinas, ports, and parks across the state work diligently to maintain equipment that is free for use.

Boat sewage waste is more concentrated than household waste and contains harmful bacteria and excess nutrients that cause illness in people, harm wildlife, and degrade water quality. Recreational boaters can prevent this pollution from entering Oregon's waterways by using pumpouts, dump stations, and floating restrooms.

Meet Molly 👋

Hello! My name is Molly Lowney. I am a 2026 fellow with the West Coast Ocean Alliance (WCOA) and Oregon Sea Grant placed at the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribe in Humboldt County, CA. As a fellow, I support the Tribe’s sustainability and environmental departments through environmental policy research, science communication, and administrative tasks. In my research, I have touched on topics like offshore energy, water rights, regional scientific priorities, and sea level rise adaptation. I also participate in WCOA convenings, engaging with Tribes from Oregon, Washington, and California.

This fellowship has allowed me to learn in depth about Tribal sovereignty and governance, areas I had minimal knowledge in previously. The opportunity to learn about the coastal and marine stewardship work being done by West Coast Tribes has also been invaluable to my understanding of coastal science and policy. The interdisciplinary nature of my position has allowed me to engage with science, coalition building, policy, and communications. This breadth of experience has exposed me to the nuances of the challenges faced by coastal Tribes presently and in the future. My hope is to continue working in coastal and marine policy, and I am grateful for the invaluable perspective and experience of working with a Tribe! ​

Released publicly in 2002, Coming Home Was Easy is a documentary based on interviews from the 1990s. It was sponsored by the Clatsop County Oral History Fund and Oregon Sea Grant as part of a community effort to preserve the maritime heritage of the Pacific Northwest. Attention boaters: Winter is coming! Now is a good time to start planning for facilities that winterize sewage disposal equipment. Many inland boating facilities take their equipment offline in the fall before freezing temperatures and winter storms hit.

Plan ahead: Facilities with a blue dot on the Pumpout Nav app winterize, so you can check your favorite spot there, or you can call the facility ahead of time. For the off season, use a bucket with a tight-fitting lid or portable commode, and plan to flush the contents at home.
