Sustainability at OSU

News and events about sustainability at OSU, plus tips on how to live sustainably on and off campus. Founded in November of 2005.

The OSU Sustainability Office is the primary support organization for sustainability efforts at OSU. The Oregon State University Sustainability Office is housed in Campus Operations, part of the Finance and Administration division. The office was formed by the creation of a full time sustainability coordinator position in November 2005. Shortly thereafter, another full-time staff position was crea

ted to focus on energy conservation efforts. Functional Areas include: Networking and Communications, Infrastructure and Administration, and Student Engagement and Academic Support. Energy efficiency and renewable energy projects are a major elements to our work, but our activities also expand into areas of political engagement, event planning, and projects related to personal behavior and energy use. Our office collaborates with departments across campus including, but not limited to Campus Recycling, ASOSU, and the Student Sustainability Initiative.

The Solar Trailer continues its busy summer - perhaps the busiest on record - with an annual trip to the Oregon Country Fair! We power the large sound stage at Dance Pavilion, the smaller WorkIt Shop, and many art installations in this part of the Fair. Additionally, our team provides public charging of small personal devices like cell phones, prioritizing things like mobility devices. There is no meaningful grid power here, so our job is pretty important!

This is just about the only recurring event that uses the Trailer’s output to the max! And you can see how dusty it gets… each year we wash the solar panels at least once, the only event where we need to do that to maximize solar power production.

So far this summer, The Solar Trailer has helped power both Electrify Portland and the Open Streets Fair. At the Open Streets Fair, it provided power for the cooling tent's air conditioning and the event sound stage. At Electrify Portland, it powered Bo Kwon's Koi Fusion.

This year, the Grads Give Back Gown Share distributed over 250 regalia items to students in need, but over 230 students who were on the waitlist for the program weren’t able to receive their items. Please consider dropping off any regalia that you can part within at the listed locations! Alumni are also welcome to donate anytime! Congratulations to our grads- Go Beavs!

Carbon Reduction Grant Update: Reducing Energy Losses by Locating and Eliminating Nitrogen Gas Leaks at ATAMI
Read more about the 30% reduction in N2 at the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Institute. The average daily baseline use was cut in half, and weekend low demand was observable. One tank, which usually lasts ~2 weeks, lasted more than 3 weeks. Ecologue linked in our linktree.

The OSU Carbon Reduction Grant Program awarded $7,840 to Cycle Away from Carbon, a student-led project helping first-time riders build confidence and choose biking over driving. In partnership with OSU Transportation Services, the program offers hands-on bike education, peer support, and even free refurbished bikes, helmets, and locks for participants. Community Engagement and Leadership is hosting a one-day leadership retreat on the Oregon coast! The goal is to practice how to address systems of inaccessibility in outdoor spaces, specifically for those with disability, and then implement practices to create more inclusive and accessible spaces. Students will have the opportunity to connect with others in the OSU community who are social justice-driven and dedicated to creating positive change. Join us for Beavs Lead: Change, and discover the power you hold and how you can use it to Spark Change! Food & transportation will be provided. This event is open to all students! OSU Carbon Reduction Grant FY26 - Solar Control Film in Air-Conditioned Spaces. A team of engineering students at the OSU Energy Efficiency Center has set out to apply solar films on windows of Batcheller and Covell. Read more about the project on our Ecologue!
