Our hearts and minds are full after an incredible Polar STEAM Summit!

We’ve shared ideas, explored new approaches to science communication and art-science integration, worked and played with polar data, told stories, made art, asked questions, and, most importantly, built connections with one another.

A huge thanks our amazing presenters and to everyone who joined us! You made this gathering what we hoped it would be: a place to connect, learn from one another, spark new ideas, and strengthen a community around polar science, art, and education.

We may have reached the Summit, but we’re excited to see where the ideas, collaborations, and connections created here take us next!

From Science Meets Story and hands-on sessions to an afternoon of creative exploration at Data Jam, today was all about finding new ways to connect polar science, art, storytelling, and people. And then we closed out the evening with the Into the Ice performance!

Virtual Educator Fellow Stephanie Erickson recently had the opportunity to visit the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Core Repository, home to more than 40 miles of ocean sediment cores that preserve Earth's climate history. Working with postdoctoral researcher Dr. Joanna Davies, Stephanie got a firsthand look at how scientists use sediment collected from the Arctic Ocean to reconstruct past environmental conditions and better understand how freshwater from melting ice influences ocean circulation.

From carefully extracting samples to isolating thousands of microscopic planktonic foraminifera, the process requires extraordinary patience and precision. These tiny fossils hold clues about past ocean temperatures, ice melt, and climate change, helping researchers piece together Earth's environmental history one sample at a time. Some of the Arctic cores Joanna studies were collected more than 50 years ago and are still providing new scientific insights today.

What does it mean to belong in science? Educator Fellow Lauren Kurzius explored that question through two reflections inspired by her time in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, working alongside researcher Dr. Julia Guimond and her field team. From battling travel delays and stepping into an unfamiliar research environment to learning new field techniques and finding her place on the team Lauren discovered that science is built on curiosity, collaboration, and the courage to step into the unknown.

In her second blog post, Lauren describes the Arctic not as a silent landscape, but as a symphony of sounds, people, and ideas. As she worked alongside researchers studying saltwater intrusion across the tundra, she witnessed how every instrument, dataset, and team member contributed to a larger story about a changing Arctic. Through the experience, she came to see science and art as complementary ways of understanding and sharing our world.
