We were very happy to connect with h**p fiber buyers Hieu (Hugh) Bui (left) and Chu Thanh from Vietnam, it took only two degrees of separation to connect them with GHIC, through our industry partners Guy Carpenter of and **p !

The “Global” in GHIC reflects more than our partners beyond the US. It reflects the worldwide connections that come through our industry relationships and their own networks of relationships built across international supply chains.

These connections are particularly important helping us work on challenges important to industry in developing industrial h**p fiber supply chains that link genetics, production, processing, manufacturing, and markets. Innovation doesn’t happen in isolation.

When it comes to h**p, it really is a small world. Helping GHIC connect to the world is a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Strengthening Agricultural Systems program and the encouragement of organizations including the National Industrial H**p Council of America and FIHO - Federation of International H**p Organizations. This approach is a part of the Oregon State University Strategy of Prosperity Widely Shared, Economic Development and Industry Relations (EDIR)

GHIC is very excited to be in Dublin as a part of this amazing summit "Scaling Industrial H**p in the Global Economy"

This is an official satellite event for the Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS2026) that is bringing together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to help inform attendees about industrial h**p production and manufacturing and how it fits into a global biobased economy.

IND H**P planned the ‘H**p In The Built Environment Symposium’ not knowing how many folks would actually show up at their Belgrade, Montana facility. The answer: A full house, standing room only.

Above, CEO Morgan Tweet (Elliott) kicked off the introduction to the h**p industry and how the broad range of application for h**p.

Economic development, research to substantiate claim, policy, finding the just-right fits for h**p industry business plans - it is all here today. It has been a great forum for connecting more pieces together. The vision is made real by a grant from the Montana Department of Commerce to IND H**p for the project through its Agritourism Grant Program.

Below, is our table for the symposium, Thank you Morgan for the invitation to attend and for GHIC to be able to show off the products our faculty are working on finding more ways to incorporate h**p into building materials.

Here is what remains of (what was just a couple of weeks ago) tall green h**p plants standing together undulating in the wind like waves.

The ribbons of bast fibers the lengths of the stalks that were harvested by the Pure Fiber Innovation’s Fiber King in-field decorticator have been baled and will be shipped to a delignification facility to be prepared for spinning into yarn for weaving into fabric.

This commercial-scaled pilot research is generating the data needed to compare this alternative production system to the traditional system for decorticating h**p stalks.

The Global H**p Innovation Center’s affiliated researchers are Everald McLennon, PhD, and Brian Charlton at the Oregon State University Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center and University of University of California, Davis’s Bob Hutmacher and Ronald Rising appreciate our Pure Fiber Innovation partners Lawrence Serbin, David Groff, and Steve Groff.

Last week The National Industrial H**p Council of America’s Global Industrial H**p Fiber Summit⁠ was under way at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Zhaohui Wu, Global H**p Innovation Center Assistant Director for Industry and International Relations, is on stage for the “Innovation in Motion: Advances in Seed to Style” panel discussion. With the other panelists' attention turned towards him.

Oregon State University is really well represented at the Summit also by Gabriel Patterson, PhD and Everald McLennon, PhD. Together, their sessions reflect GHIC’s commitment to connecting field, factory, product, and market. Thank you Patrick A. for the invitation to participate - where West Coast ideals can meet East Coast traditions.

It is a great place to catch up with friends and partners in the h**p world.

It was earlier this year that Dr. Ernst Cebert with Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University passed.

Ernie was the first university-affiliated collaborator with the Global H**p Innovation Center in 2020, partnering in standard national chemical h**p variety trials and collaborating in breeding research to push the adaptation of fiber h**p materials into low Southeastern U.S. latitudes.

GHIC h**p breeder Stephen Baluch met with Dr. Rhona Miller-Cebert, PhD and presented a plaque recognizing her husband’s valued contributions and friendship with GHIC.

Also shown in the photo are Dr. Monday Mbila (L), research station manager, and geneticist Dr. Xianyan Kuang (R) who has continued on the partnership with Oregon State University.

OSU Grad Student Patrick Dapaa Kwao, working with GHIC affiliated faculty member David Bernell, visited the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes at Fort Hall in eastern Idaho, as part of our continuing work to better understand industrial h**p business development on Tribal lands.

Patrick met with Kasyn Vollmer and teams from the Tribes’ Agricultural Resource Management Program and Farm Services and Tribal Enterprise.

The conversations there highlighted several interconnected challenges: limited markets and marketing channels, lack of nearby processing and decortication capacity, constraints in accessing specialized harvesting equipment, and limited state-level support for development of the h**p sector. The visit reinforced an important point it is not simply a matter of h**p fiber crop production, but more broadly issues related to supply-chains and economic development.

Listening directly to Tribal agricultural and enterprise leaders helps us better understand how markets, infrastructure, policy, and technical capacity must come together if industrial h**p is to create lasting economic opportunities on Tribal lands, just as in other rural areas.

There's a lot to learn about h**p, and this summer marks the third year of our student exchange program at the OSU College of Ag Sci Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center (KBREC) with the College of Agriculture, Science, and Education (CASE) in Portland, Jamaica!

Plant Science BSc students Kaeem Roswell and Tahjneil Goulbourne are working with our amazing colleague Everald McLennon, PhD, alongside Luis Vargas, Biotech 2 at KBREC, gaining hands-on research experience while contributing to our industrial h**p fiber studies.

The interns are sampling plants from field trials examining how plant age, position along the stalk, stalk diameter, and other growth factors influence the yield and quality of bast fiber and hurd. These measurements may seem simple one plant at a time, but collectively they help us understand how the plant develops and how those differences translate into bast fiber and hurd yield and quality. There is a lot of plant architecture to understood before optimal production systems spanning from gene to plant to factory to manufactured product can assure everyone participating in the supply chain can make a profit.

This is experiential learning in the field at its best: students learning by handling the crop, making the measurements, asking questions, and helping generate the knowledge that helps move the industry forward.
