GHIC partner Bob Hutmacher is heading up our field research in Central California. Gordon Jones and Everald McLennon, PhD are grateful to Ronnie Rissing and the farm and shop crews at WSFS who are making this research possible. The station has been a great place to do research with Bob for more than 40 years!

Industrial h**p fiber trials at the UC Davis West Side Research and Extension Center are nearing harvest, with plants reaching 10-12 feet in height and early flowering just now beginning across the field!

This trial will be harvested next week using a green decortication system developed by Pure Fiber Innovations to evaluate fiber production and processing opportunities that completely take the need for a mechanical decortication facility out of the picture and which could make two income streams available to farmers, behind the farm gate.

Thank you Dr. Colleen Pokorny from the OSU College of Business Apparel Design Program, for leading the way in h**p fiber incorporation in fiber arts with her presentation, "Make It With H**p: Exploring H**p Textiles in Quilting, Apparel, and Fiber Arts"

She spoke with the Corvallis Contemporary Fiber Arts Guild highlighting h**p textiles amd discussed how materials can shift perceptions and inspire new sustainable textiles. Sounds like really great discussions were had! Amazing stuff! Thank you!

As Dolor put it, "Life cycle assessment (LCA) relies on high-quality inventory data, yet data gaps remain a significant challenge for emerging biobased industries such as industrial h**p. In this study, we explored approaches to addressing these gaps and developed life cycle inventories for h**p straw, fiber, and hurd to support early-stage sustainability assessment and decision-making."

Congrats and thanks to the co-authors, Dolor Enarevba, Prof. Karl Haapala and Heidi Thiele, for their invaluable contributions and collaboration.

Relationships are everything. Private-Public Partnerships begin with the needs of industry and stakeholders. They organize research, education, and extension capabilities to help overcome challenges while creating broadly shared benefits.

Research creates knowledge and innovation creates impact. At GHIC, our most effective partnerships begin by listening to the needs of of our stakeholders. Real-world challenges shape the research questions we pursue and the multidisciplinary teams we assemble to solve them.

Publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed science remains fundamental to our mission, but our responsibility does not end there. Research that is “thrown over the wall” with the hope that someone will eventually pick it up and use it is not enough. GHIC's goal is to work alongside partners throughout the research process so discoveries become solutions. This commitment to Private-Public Partnerships is one way that GHIC contributes to Oregon State University’s vision of Prosperity Widely Shared and its emphasis on Economic Development and Industry Relations.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share examples of how this philosophy guides our work and the partnerships that are helping transform h**p research into real-world outcomes.

These brilliant GHIC partners attended the INFORMS Transportation Science and Logistics (TSL) Conference (July 27-29, 2026) at the MIT campus!

Kazhal Gharibi (R) and Ping-Hung Hsieh (L) of Oregon State University presented the poster, "Growth Planning in Emerging Agricultural Supply Chains: Demand Scaling and Warehouse Opening Thresholds."

The research is co-authored with Karl R. Haapala of Oregon State University and Kevin Zhang of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center.

The research examines how demand growth influences the timing of warehouse investment in emerging agricultural supply chains. Using GIS-derived transportation data and mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), we investigate when opening the first regional warehouse becomes economically justified as demand scales. The poster generated many thoughtful discussions with researchers and practitioners throughout the session.

This work is supported by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), Strengthening Agricultural Systems (SAS), project award no. 2021-68012-35957 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

Turning genomic discovery into manufacturing-ready natural fiber and grain food and beverage systems one breeding cycle at a time!

Last week GHIC genomicist Kelly Vining, graduate student Tuesday Danielle Simenc, and h**p breeder Stephen Baluch worked through the summer heat at Oregon State University’s Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center, collecting data from an industrial h**p breeding nursery focused on fiber and grain production.

This research is part of GHIC’s Gene → Plant → Field → Factory → Manufactured Product strategy. By connecting plant growth, fiber quality, and other materials characteristics to the evolving Cannabis Pangenome project, we're building the scientific foundation needed to adapt fiber and grain h**p to crop production systems at latitudes below 45° N while producing quality raw materials that consistently meet performance specifications.

ast week, Global H**p Innovation Center policy specialists David Bernell, Scott Akins, and Patrick Tetteh Dapaa in the Oregon State University - College of Liberal Arts met with Jonalee Squeochs, Interim General Manager of Yakama Nation Farms, to tap her experience and gain her insights into the challenges Tribal agricultural and food enterprises face today.

Yakama Farm's facilities are impressive and the information provides valuable boots-on-the-ground perspectives.

These activities are part of our USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Service Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) and USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Strengthening Agricultural Systems (SAS-2) projects, where we are working alongside Tribal partners to better understand the policies, infrastructure, business opportunities, and investments needed to support sustainable Tribal agricultural and biobased manufacturing economies.

Thank you, Jonalee, for your hospitality welcoming our team to you tribe's land and for sharing your knowledge. We look forward to continuing these conversations with you and other of our Tribal partners as we work together to identify pathways that strengthen Tribal sovereignty and economic opportunities for building resilient regional biobased economies.

Big congrats to Dolor Enarevba as he begins his new role as Sustainability Operations Specialist with Auria!

Dolor’s journey as a graduate student with GHIC-affiliated faculty member Karl Haapala in the College of Engineering reflects exactly what GHIC strives to achieve - preparing the next generation of outstanding practitioners to translate university research into real-world industrial impact 💪

Supported through the a USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Strengthening Agricultural Systems grant, Dolor developed expertise in industrial h**p, life cycle assessment, sustainable manufacturing, and biobased materials manufacturing that will help advance the use of renewable natural fibers in the global automotive industry.
