"My dad passed away beginning of the semester and being the oldest brother and the last of the two survivors of the family I decided to do what I have to to take care of my brother, regardless of our history so… I stepped up, I took control over the situation, I inherited this huge burden and now I’m still in the process of doing everything all for my brother’s future but also for mine. "There was a lot of time like, with my junior year, just before my junior year where just everything was going wrong and I pretty much had everybody against me for school and it was just time to show them what exactly I was made of so it was me sticking to my guns and kind of like showing that I am able to do what I want to do for the rest of my life."

"I think a time that was probably where I had to be the bravest was I started teaching college at age 21 and I looked younger than most of my class, in fact I was younger than most of my class. I was going to school in Omaha and one one of the guys stationed at Offutt Air Force base was taking a class and he took one look at me and informed me that I was gonna call him “Sir.” And I said, “I don’t ask you to call me Professor Garrighan and you’re not gonna get called “sir.” I mean, I was two days into a teaching career and getting a challenge like that… I mean that was scary. I expected a lot of things, but not that type of challenge." .. (to follow all Humans of SUNY Cortland, follow us on instagram )
