The interesting thing is I never thought of myself as a romance writer.

And I pretty much still don’t.

But even from the first books I put out I believed a good story gets better when there’s a love story running through it.

Look at some of the best movies. Even a good action movie. There’s usually somebody the main character loves, wants, loses, almost gets, screws things up with, or is trying to get back to.

That’s kind of what happened with my series Beyond the Goalposts.

I started with a football season in small-town Texas. I created Matt who was trying to have a big season and maybe get himself out that town some day.

Then I wrote a companion book with a new character, Amber.

Then I threw in all the mess that comes with being seventeen and trying to figure out who you care about while you’re also trying to figure out who you are.

Then I wrote Book Two that leans more into that side of Matt and Amber’s story more than Book One did.

It needed it to be honest. It made the story better.

The football season and the dream to play beyond high school was still driving the story.

But under that was a story that came out so much better.

She thought a wink meant something. For three weeks, it did. At least to her.
