From the Island to The Gambia, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi researchers are exploring one of the world’s most important and least studied mangrove ecosystems.

Dr. Loretta Battaglia and graduate researcher Emily Letner ’27, joined an international team supported by National Geographic’s Perpetual Planet initiative to study biodiversity, carbon storage, and the ways local communities rely on mangrove ecosystems.

Over three expeditions, the researchers documented plant and animal life, collected sediment samples, and deployed acoustic monitoring devices above and below the water.
