Follow us, as we follow our dream to travel and explore via boat! Kona is a 1981 11 meter (36 ft) center cockpit sloop made by S2 Yachts.

She was flooded and washed up on the beach in 2005 during hurricane Katrina. She is currently undergoing a refit in Flowery Branch, GA including a re-power before she heads back out to sea.

More raspberry pi nav station stuff: We added a ruuvitag (barometric pressure, temperature, humidity) to the setup along with recording all NMEA data into influxdb and then using grafana to query influxdb to display that data in Kip (or just a browser).

Pretty cool but mostly I don’t think people would be interested in this? I love it though. Check out our barometer 😀. I’m still building the other graphs.

Kip displays graphs on its own… so why use influxdb and grafana? The issue with Kip is that it only stores the data while your browser is open. It’s stored in ram and eventually the swap file killing performance. When you close the browser and reopen Kip those graphs have to start all over. With influxdb (database) the information is written to the hard drive (upgraded the pi from using an sd card to a 1TB Samsung T7!) so it doesn’t go away on a reboot or refresh of the browser. According to ChatGPT if I record all of our NMEA data etc, it will take approx 7000 to 20000 years for influxdb to fill the hard drive 😂😂.

Listen, I feel like most of you are probably not interested in this but I thought I’d share. I love tinkering with this stuff.

We came here to do boat projects and progress is pretty good. Doubled our solar which is going to be awesome when we’re on the hook. Also built out a raspberry pi nav station, added an Icom 7300 HF radio, re finished the cabin sole, repowered 😳, new cockpit cushion (thanks Jeremy Wescott!), new compass at the helm, new A/C… that’s a pretty incredible list honestly!!

Still need to do a bottom job, paint the hull, etc. A lot of stuff left to do still but we’re chugging right along. Solar is already putting out about 230% more than our last panels. Outstanding 😀
