One of my students asked me about my approach to training when I was competing at a high level…this was my response:

If you look at training as a competition then you’ve lost the purpose and point of “training”. I’ve seen some of the best fighters in the world perform one way in training and another way under the lights, same goes for jiu jitsu practioners.

Training is just that training. If you aren’t allowing yourself to be put in bad positions and risk the chance of being caught then you’re not working on or discovering deficiencies. If you are too afraid to do it in training then you sure as hell won’t figure it out when someone gets you in a compromising situation WHEN IT COUNTS.

In the past 20 years I’ve seen it all. The guys who train only looking to win every position and every scramble like they are competing at the world championships. Don’t get me wrong there is a time and a place for that…but it shouldn’t be every practice. I’ve seen the guys who get pi**ed when they get caught rather than ask “how did you do that”. I’ve seen the people too stubborn to accept the tap who end up injuring themselves, not because they didn’t no better but because their ego was too big. I’ve seen the mat monster who can’t win a competition to save his life.

To truly be great at jiu jitsu you have to humble yourself and realize, the mats aren’t only where you win…they are where you learn, progress and grow. To do that you MUST humble yourself and realize training isn’t where it matters, COMPETITION is what separates the Legends from the self proclaimed practice champions.

In today’s world it’s easy to watch a few instructionals, memorize techniques off YouTube, and sound knowledgeable. But REAL jiu jitsu isn’t built through regurgitation…it’s built through application.

Technique means nothing if it cannot be performed against real resistance. The mats expose everything. They expose timing, pressure, composure, detail, and whether someone truly understands what they’re teaching or if they’re simply repeating what they heard from someone else.

A good coach doesn’t just explain technique — they can apply it, troubleshoot it, adapt it, and demonstrate it live against resisting opponents. There’s a difference between someone who studies jiu jitsu and someone who has actually lived it.

That doesn’t mean a coach has to be a world champion, but they should absolutely be capable of performing the techniques they teach. If someone cannot make their techniques work themselves, they probably shouldn’t be building others around them.

At the end of the day, the mats don’t care about followers, fancy edits, or motivational captions. The mats tell the truth. Skill speaks for itself.
