Some of our 7th graders this afternoon got to take part in an Author Webinar with Rex Ogle! He was introducing his new book Absentee, about 3 boys who are chronically absent from middle school for multiple reasons. He often writes about circumstances kids live with that are beyond their control- being on free lunch, parents being unemployed, taking care of siblings, missing school when you really want to go. Students were really focused, and for a group of 60 with a transition in the middle, they did a great job of being respectful and attentive!
He left us saying this:
Life is hard, but it’s also beautiful. You can choose to be positive or negative. But no matter what, if you work hard and keep your head up, you’ll have more good days than bad. 💕

🍝 Tri Tri Triangle! 🔺

Today, students got hands-on with the Triangle Inequality Theorem by using spaghetti noodles to test whether three given side lengths could actually form a triangle!

Students worked together to build and compare different combinations of side lengths while discovering that the sum of any two sides must be greater than the third side in order to create a triangle.

A fun, hands-on way to make math come to life! 🔺🍝📐

Remember asking “When will I ever use this math in the real world?”
6th Grade Math Teacher Lisa DeLeon brought her students to the library along with Mrs. Guerra’s classes to work on the beginnings of their math restaurant concept. Students ordered from each other from a menu but were given different tasks like figuring out prices for half orders, calculating a party ticket with a flat gratuity and an extra tip, etc… these are real world math skills!
Shout out to Ms. DeLeon for taking on double her class load in this project!
