Katherine Johnson was born on August 26, 1918. She would be 108 today.

In the weeks before John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth, NASA's electronic computers had run his trajectory, and Glenn did not trust them. He asked engineers to get the girl to check the numbers, and said that if she said they were good, he was ready to go. The girl was a 43-year-old research mathematician who reran the same equations by hand on a mechanical calculator. It took her a day and a half. The numbers held, and he flew on February 20, 1962.

She was not checking someone else's field but her own. Two years earlier she and the engineer Ted Skopinski had written the NASA paper on determining the azimuth angle at burnout — which way a spacecraft must be pointing when its engines cut off. Get it wrong and the capsule comes down in the wrong ocean. Langley's Flight Research Division had never before published a report with a woman credited as an author.

She stayed 33 years and retired in 1986. Her calculations carried Alan Shepard into space, put Glenn in orbit and fed into Apollo 11. Obama gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and said no one knows that John Glenn would not fly until Katherine Johnson checked the math.
