Honor Guard training for Police, Fire, and EMS. Presentations, demos, and practical exercises of duties tasked to Honor Guard teams. Training varies from full 40 hour courses to tailor made training sessions specifically for your team.

Dear Southern California Honor Guard Members,

The California Peace Officer’s Memorial Foundation (CPOMF) is seeking honor guard volunteers to participate in the airport cordon to respectfully greet and receive our Honor Families as they arrive for the 2026 Memorial.

Detail: Airport Cordon – Honor Family Arrivals
Date: Saturday, May 2, 2026
Time: All day (shifts will run until the last family arrives)
Location: Sacramento Airport, details to follow
Attire: Honor guard uniform (white gloves); cover required
Duties: Form cordon at arrival points, render honors, assist with respectful es**rt to awaiting shuttles

Your presence sets the tone for the families’ experience and demonstrates our collective respect and support. Members may volunteer for full-day coverage or indicate specific availability windows; shift assignments will be coordinated to ensure continuous coverage throughout the day.

Cal Fire Engineer Danny Cook, 45, died from a medical emergency while fighting a house fire in Nuevo, Riverside County, on December 31. Cook worked at Station 90 in Perris. The fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. in the 31300 block of Marcuchio Road, with firefighters finding a garage fully engulfed on arrival.
Two civilians, a man and a woman, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, Cook succumbed to the medical emergency.

Memorial services and funeral arrangements are pending.

Burbank police K9 Spike was shot and killed by a suspect, who was later killed in a shootout with officers, following a traffic stop in Burbank.

Officers stopped the driver for tinted windows when an armed passenger in that car took off running up the freeway on-ramp.

Spike located the suspect in a nearby neighborhood. The suspect fired multiple rounds, striking Spike, and fled the scene again on foot. Spike was rushed to veterinarian but was pronounced deceased.
The suspect was later located hiding and more gunfire was exchanged. After a standoff the suspect emerged again firing and was struck by police gunfire. He was pronounced deceased.

Alhambra Police Officer Alec Sanders was killed in the line of duty following a collision while involved in a vehicle pursuit. Officer Sanders was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased a few hours later. Officer Sanders was 28 years old and had served with another agency before transferring to Alhambra PD eight months ago.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Andrew Nunez died today after he was shot while responding to a domestic violence incident in Rancho Cucamonga.

Deputy Nunez was pronounced dead at an area hospital after he was shot in the head by a man who later led authorities on a high-speed chase on the 210 Freeway that ultimately ended with a crash.

Nunez responded to the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga for a report of an armed man threatening a woman. Upon arrival of deputies, the suspect opened fire immediately and struck Nunez once. Nunez was transported to a local trauma center but died as a result of his injuries.

Nunez was a six-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Department. He was married with a 2-year-old daughter and was expecting a second child with his wife. honorguard

La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle while helping with a fatal collision scene on Interstate 8 near Waring Road on October 20th. Despite life-saving measures, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Officer Craven was 25 years old and worked for La Mesa PD for two years.

Chowchilla Police Officer Ray Barrantes was killed when his patrol car struck the rear end of a semi-trailer in Madera County at the intersection of State Route 152 and Road 13 at 10:30 P.M.

Officer Barrantes was driving his patrol car eastbound on the 152 when a semi-trailer hauling tomatoes southbound on Road 13 crossed the 152. Officer Barrantes’ patrol car collided with the right rear end of the semi-trailer. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officer Barrantes had served with the City of Chowchilla Police Department for nearly two years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

LASD lost three detectives during an explosion at the Special Enforcement Bureau’s training facility Friday morning. Detective Joshua Kelley-Eklund is a 20-year veteran with the LASD, with the previous assignments at the Pitchess Detention Center North and North County Correctional Facility. He became an arson and explosive investigator with the Special Enforcement Bureau in 2022 and received his bomb tech certifications as well as other training accolades. Kelley-Eklund is survived by his wife, Jessica Eklund, and their seven children. Detective Victor Lemus was a 22-year veteran with the sheriff’s department previously served at Twin Towers Correctional Facility. When he first joined the Special Enforcement Bureau in 2017, Lemus was a K-9 handler. He became an arson and explosive investigator last year.

Detective Lemus is survived by his wife, Sheriff’s Department Detective Nancy Lemus and three daughters.

Detective Lemus comes from a family of public servants within the LASD. His sisters are also members of the department: Sergeant Belen Lemus at Special Victims Bureau, Deputy Perla Lemus at Century Sheriff Station and Custody Assistant Wendy Lemus of Population and Management Bureau. His brother-in-law Sergeant Robert Catalan is assigned to Carson Station. Detective William Osborn was a 23-year veteran first began his tenure with the sheriff’s department at the Men’s Central Jail before transferring to Pico River as a patrol deputy. After receiving commendations for recovering stolen cars, Osborn was promoted to the rank of detective. He became an arson and explosive investigator in 2019. He was described as ‘one of tenured bomb technicians regularly relied upon when faced with a new challenge. He has a broad range of experience and could be relied upon to provide relevant insight on a broad range of subjects.

CA Parole Agent Joshua Byrd was shot and killed in the Division of Adult Parole Operations in Oakland on Thursday afternoon.

Agent Byrd was transported to Highland Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

The shooter, a parolee who was released from prison a week and a half earlier, fled the scene, taking a bus and later stealing a car. He was apprehended.

Agent Byrd was 40 years old and had served with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for 11 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.
