2 Easy Beautiful Pressed Flower Crafts

Let’s connect with nature and collect some treasures!

🍃 This adorable nature press is easy to make and little explorers will love using it to press all the flowers, leaves, and natural wonders they find on their trails.

Plus, we have a creative idea for what to do with those pressed treasures, so read on…

𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕟𝕖𝕖𝕕:
1 sheet A4 cardboard
1 sheet A4 paper
Glue
Elastic bands
Markers

𝕄𝕒𝕜𝕖 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕡𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕤:
Fold the cardboard to make a book cover
Write “Nature Press” on the front cover and decorate it with markers.
Line the inside with paper and glue it in place.
Secure the press with elastic bands.

ℍ𝕦𝕟𝕥:
Now head out on a nature hunt to find petals, blooms, and foliage to place in the press.
Tell the kiddos to look out for a hiking stick too… More on this later!
At home, lay heavy books on top of the press and check back in 2 weeks – those collected flowers should be dried and flat.

But what to do with them?
Decorate the hiking stick to inspire even more magical nature walks!

𝔻𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕣𝕒𝕥𝕖 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕤𝕥𝕚𝕔𝕜:
Use a water-based sealer like Mod Podge to stick the petals and leaves in place on the staff.
Then paint over another layer of sealer for protection.
Leave it to dry for about 20 minutes, and voila!

A nature-covered walking stick that will make kiddos want to go on walk after walk in the great outdoors!

Calming Kids

Welcome to the final part of our series on helping calm our kiddos!

This time, let’s look at some practical strategies to tackle different kinds of difficult feelings.

“Let’s go to your happy place.”
Visualization can be a powerful anti-anxiety tool. In moments of fear, we can guide a child to imagine a safe, warm, and happy place where they feel comfortable. That sense of security will spread into their current state, to ease physical tension and immediate feelings of anxiety. When they’re feeling calm again, we can talk in more detail about their happy place, inviting them to personalize it so they can return again and again, whenever they need to.

“Help me move this wall.”
When their challenging feelings include anger and frustration, children may find it helpful to do something physically demanding. Together, try to “move” the nearest wall; as they huff, puff, and push, they’ll feel a release of tension and emotion.

“Let’s list everyone you love.”
If anxiety is love’s greatest killer,” then the opposite is also true. Amid challenging moments, we can invite a child to name every person they love. Affirming and talking about how those people love them back grows the feeling of love to dispel the anxiety.

“Come for a walk.”
Exercise is an incredible stress reliever; it burns excess energy and loosens tense muscles. Going for a walk outdoors has the added mood-boosting benefits of nature. Often, children find it easier to talk about what’s bothering them while engaged in another activity; think of it as walk-and-talk therapy!

How To Teach Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is learned. And we can nurture it in our kids. Here’s how.

Lead with empathy.
When a child is experiencing challenging feelings, and we acknowledge it::
- It makes them feel calmer and more secure, so they can begin to self-regulate.
- It helps them identify what emotion they are experiencing.

Kids need boundaries.
Children understand and feel secure when we set limits and make expectations clear. By setting boundaries, we’re giving them a guide to what’s appropriate, so they can confidently navigate the world.

Conflict resolution is a part of it too.
Involving children in making peace helps them take accountability and think creatively and empathetically. We can start by offering options: “Would you like to build the fort together or take some time in separate spaces?”

After a challenging incident with unwanted behavior, or even at the end of the day, we can encourage children to reflect on how they felt, what strategies helped, and whether they’d do anything differently.

This week we had so many things to talk about and learn! We are introduced the children to a Hispanic holiday called El Dia Del Nino also known as The Day Of The Child.

We took this holiday and spread it into a week's worth of activities and learning, along with our Frogstreet theme of Nurturing Earth.

We combined the two lessons of the holiday and our Frogstreet theme by explaining to the students that we are recognizing them for their importance in society and their wellbeing and how they can not only celebrate themselves but the Earth aswell.

The students played carnival games out of recycled materials that we normally use!

We also got to dance and celebrate Hispanic music.

Children take cues on how they feel about themselves from the grown-ups around them.

🗺️ Behaviors like pushing boundaries are all a part of learning. Small children have to figure out how to navigate a big world, and they learn appropriate behaviors when adults are firm but kind. Explain why the boundaries exist, but give them space to explore their independence.

💕 Children love unconditionally. Even when they are frustrated (or being frustrating!), their grown-ups are their favorite people.

Popsicle Stick Rainbows

A colorful, crafty, arty activity to introduce super science and geography ideas to kids!

Transforming popsicle sticks into this beautiful creation is a great way to start talking about rainbows!

We can start by asking kiddos if they’ve ever seen a rainbow in real life.
What was the weather like?

To see a rainbow, we generally need rain and sun at the same time.

That’s because raindrops act like prisms, which break the sun’s white light into 7 colors.

Practice naming the rainbow’s colors while lining up those popsicle sticks:
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Some people remember the order by thinking of a man called Roy G Biv!
Or by saying a sentence like “Richard of York gave battle in vain.”

Here are some more fun facts about rainbows to dazzle young minds:

- A rainbow is actually a full circle, but since we see it on the ground, we only see the semi-circle.
- Earth is the only planet in our solar system to have rainbows. It’s the only one with constant precipitation and direct sunlight.
- The ancient Greeks and the Romans believed rainbows were a path to Mount Olympus, where the gods lived.
- The record for the longest-observed rainbow is 9 hours!
- No 2 people see the same rainbow in the same way. We each see the light through different raindrops, so everyone is unique… Just like us!

Validating Their Feelings

We know the power of validating their feelings and creatively exploring their worries.
This time, let’s explore what to say and do to guide them through those challenging times.

“Let me hold you.”
Simply hugging a child or letting them snuggle up close provides the physical contact they need to relax and feel safe.

“Tell me about it.”
When we give our children the chance to talk about what’s bothering them without interruption or judgment, they can process their thoughts and feelings and come up with a solution that works for them.

“I’m taking a deep breath.”
We can show our own calming strategies and encourage children to join in, so they have a blueprint to follow. Breathing deeply into the belly helps to calm the nervous system and gives us something to concentrate on.

“Remember when…”
Competence breeds confidence and confidence can overcome worries. When we remind a child of a time they were brave or capable, we give them a positive feeling to hook onto and let them know they can handle it.
