Today Esther Garcia and I represented our CABE Riverside Chapter #6 and met with Stanyan Buckingham III, Executive Director of Development for University of California, Riverside School of Education, to receive an update on our CABE Riverside Chapter 6 & UCR Jezik Venegas Future Bilingual Educators Endowed $25,000 Scholarship we started in 2021. We gave $12,500 and the UCR Trustees matched it with the Beyond Brilliant Trustee Challenge Match Fund! See the link for more information.

Our CABE Riverside Chapter #6 had our planning meeting this week and also celebrated birthdays and career milestones. Happy to share our dates for our meetings and events:

📣PSA: According to research, AUTISM AND BILINGUALISM CAN CO-EXIST!

Here are scientific studies explained by speech-language pathologist Claudio Serrano Johnson of Blossoming Bilinguals:

Source 1. Garrido, D., López, B., & Carballo, G. (2024). Bilingualism and language in children with autistic spectrum disorder: a systematic review. Neurología (English Edition), 39(1), 84-96.

The review analyzed 12 studies from four different databases, consisting of a group of 328 kids with ASD:
169 ASD-Bilingual (ASD-B) and
159 ASD-Monolingual (ASD-M), ages 3 to 12.

Overall, the research shows that being bilingual doesn't make language
development harder for children with ASD.

Most of the studies agree that bilingualism doesn't have a negative impact, even though many families and healthcare professionals still believe it might.

The results indicate that there aren't major differences in language skills between bilingual and monolingual kids with ASD.

If a child (whether they're neurotypical or neurodivergent) doesn't get regular exposure to a language, it makes sense that the language won't develop well or might fade over time. We shouldn't automatically assume that if a child with autism doesn't pick up a language or loses it, it's because of their autism. It might just be that they weren't getting enough input in that language.

In 2021 our CABE Riverside Chapter #6 voted to donate $12,500 to start the CABE Riverside & UCR Jezik Venegas Future Bilingual Educators Endowed $25,000 Scholarship. The scholarship is named for UCR College of Education Bilingual Education advocates, Professor Lilian Jezek (Ret.) and Professor Dr. Yolanda Venegas (RIP). The chapter gave $12,500 and the UCR Trustees matched it with the Beyond Brilliant Trustee Challenge Match Fund! Since then we have awarded five scholarships. Excited to receive these updates from UC Riverside. Many of you donate to our opportunity drawings and events, so now you get to read about these deserving awardees as well!
