Learning in this kind of environment allows a child to discover and grow through the activities and Montessori materials that resonate with them.

• The Practical Life activities provide children much practice with ‘self-help’ skills.

• Working with the concrete Montessori materials first can improve a child’s abstract thinking.

• Montessori starts with the concept of the ‘whole’ and then explores the ‘parts’ which can make more sense to many with learning differences.

• Vocabulary-building activities are found across the Montessori curriculum so that a child can better express themselves.

• In Montessori, repeating an activity over & over is encouraged as much as the child would like to.

• Social skills are practiced and built within the Montessori classroom.

The Three-Period Lesson 🌱

The three-period lesson in the Montessori early childhood program is an effective way of introducing new vocabulary. The child actively participates and is involved in each of the three stages.

1 – Naming Phase: Teacher isolates the quality or vocabulary being introduced “This is…”

2 – Recognition Phase: Teacher asks the child to identify the objects as the teacher names them “Show me…”

3 – Confirmation Phase: The teacher points to the object and asks, “What is this?”

⭐️ The three-period lesson is first introduced with sensorial materials, focusing on either size or color differences, such as the Pink Tower or Color Tablets.

⭐️ Typically, there will be three objects or qualities to start with.

⭐️ At first the teacher will use items that have a lot of contrast so that the child can easily distinguish between the objects.

⭐️ The learning cycle is short for the three-period lesson as it is intense.

⭐️ In most cases a teacher will not present a three-period lesson until the child has worked with the related material.

Depending on the vocabulary being presented, the teacher may present all three periods of the lesson in one session, or they may break up the lesson over multiple sessions. When presenting over more than one session, the teacher always begins by repeating the first period.

The three-period lesson is used extensively throughout the early childhood program. 🌱

Montessori classrooms ideally have lots of space to move around easily with comfort. Natural light and an airy feel are strived for when designing a Montessori space.

Montessori classrooms often have furniture and materials made of natural materials that are sensory-rich, such as wood, metal, or natural fibers 🪢 This helps create a connection to the natural world.

Keeping in mind the above will promote a sense of harmony and calm for the children in your classroom.
