Marcadé arrives late—but his entrance changes everything.

A trusted messenger from France, Marcadé comes bearing news that must be delivered, however painful. His arrival brings the court's games of love and wit to an abrupt end, reminding everyone that beyond the walls of Navarre, another world has been moving forward without them.

This is a small but pivotal role requiring dignity, presence, and emotional honesty: an actor who can enter a room filled with laughter and, without theatrics, quietly change its course.

Boyet knows what's happening—usually before everyone else does.

A trusted gentleman in the Princess of France's company, Boyet is diplomat, confidant, observer, and enthusiastic participant in the games of wit unfolding around him. He recognizes the King's attraction to the Princess almost immediately, trades verbal volleys with the ladies and lords alike, and seems thoroughly at home wherever the conversation takes him.

This is a featured role requiring charm, verbal dexterity, comic timing, and strong ensemble instincts: an actor who can make Boyet both a polished courtier and a delighted accomplice in everyone else's romantic confusion.

Don Armado is hopelessly in love with Jaquenetta. Jaquenetta has noticed.

A country woman with a dry sense of humor and little patience for grand displays, Jaquenetta meets Armado's extravagant courtship with wonderfully economical replies. He promises to tell her wonders; she asks, “With that face?” He declares his love; she answers, “So I heard you say.”

This is a featured comic role requiring confidence, understated humor, and impeccable timing: an actor who can say more with one look—or one perfectly placed line—than Armado can manage in an entire speech.

EARTHY. GUILELESS. EAGER.

Costard may not always know what's going on, but he's almost always willing to be part of it.

A country fellow with an enthusiasm considerably greater than his understanding, Costard becomes an unlikely messenger in the court's romantic entanglements—with predictably imperfect results. He mangles impressive words, delivers important letters, and approaches each new assignment with cheerful confidence, whether or not he fully understands what he's been asked to do.

This is a featured comic role requiring warmth, physical comedy, and an instinct for language: an actor who can embrace Costard's mistakes without making him the joke—and capture the infectious enthusiasm of a man who's simply delighted to be included.

ASTUTE. MISCHIEVOUS. LOYAL.

Moth may be Armado's page, but there's little question which of them is quicker on the uptake.

Young, perceptive, and delightfully mischievous, Moth listens patiently to his master's extravagant ideas—and rarely misses an opportunity to puncture them. His wordplay is fast, his observations are sharp, and he often understands Armado better than Armado understands himself.

But beneath all the teasing is genuine loyalty. Moth stays at Armado's side and even throws himself into the ill-fated pageant of the Nine Worthies, tackling role after role as the evening descends into glorious chaos.

This is a featured comic role requiring verbal agility, strong timing, and a lively sense of play: an actor who can match Moth's intelligence with youthful mischief while keeping the affection at the heart of his relationship with Armado.

GRANDIOSE. THEATRICAL. SINCERE.

Don Armado never uses a small word when a magnificent one might do.

A Spanish gentleman at the court of Navarre, Armado approaches everything with tremendous style—including his hopeless infatuation with Jaquenetta. He is extravagant in speech, heroic in his own imagination, and completely sincere in both his romantic and theatrical ambitions. To Armado, life isn't merely lived. It is performed.

And when the court needs entertainment, Armado is ready to provide it. His spectacularly ambitious pageant of the Nine Worthies may not unfold quite as he envisions, but no amount of chaos can diminish the grandeur with which he approaches it.

This is a featured comic role requiring bold choices, verbal dexterity, physical comedy, and absolute commitment: an actor willing to go gloriously over the top while never forgetting that Don Armado believes every single moment of it.

Katharine enjoys a good game of wit—but don't expect her to let you win.

Lively and self-possessed, Katharine is perfectly capable of joining the fun while keeping her own counsel. She questions what others take for granted, knows how to turn a gentleman's words back on him, and has little patience for anyone who mistakes flirtation for surrender.

This is a featured role requiring confidence, comic timing, and a sharp sense of play.

YOUTHFUL. ROMANTIC. PLAYFUL.

Dumaine may be the youngest of Navarre's lords—and he certainly falls in love like it.

Charming, playful, and thoroughly smitten with Katharine, Dumaine embraces romance with considerably less resistance than his companions. His poetry is extravagant, his affection enthusiastic, and once the gentlemen abandon their impossible oath, he's more than ready to enjoy the adventure.

This is a featured role requiring charm, comic timing, and youthful energy in an actor who can bring an openhearted enthusiasm to Dumaine.

A lady attending the Princess of France, Maria is observant, practical, and quietly amused by the romantic confusion unfolding around her. When the ladies turn the tables on their disguised suitors, Maria is perfectly willing to join the fun.

This is a featured role requiring warmth, understated wit, and strong ensemble instincts: an actor who can make the most of Maria's economy, finding the humor in watching carefully, speaking plainly, and landing the right line at exactly the right moment.

Meet LONGAVILLE.

DISCIPLINED. EARNEST. LITERAL.

Longaville believes in rules. Especially when he helped make them.

A loyal member of Ferdinand's court, Longaville embraces the King's grand experiment in study and self-denial with admirable determination. Where Berowne questions the plan, Longaville is ready to follow it—and he sees remarkably little reason to complicate matters by thinking too hard about why it might fail.

Then, of course, he falls in love.

Longaville approaches Maria with much the same earnest conviction he brought to the oath he has just broken. He's sincere, determined, and occasionally a step behind the people around him—which may be exactly where some of his best comedy lives.

This is a featured role requiring sincerity, comic timing, and a willingness to play the character straight: an actor who can make Longaville funny not because he is trying to be funny, but because he is absolutely certain he understands what's going on.
