Leaving enough space for you and the judge to work around your heifer is an essential part of getting a good look! Spacing is a two way street though, we don’t want to be too close or too far from the wall, the calf in front of us, or walking so slow we create a bottle neck for the heifers behind us! A calf’s width and length is a good way to think about spacing from side to side and in front and behind us. As always listen to any directions from the judge or ring person as well when it comes to spacing, especially in large classes.

Switching feet has been a general showmanship guideline since before I was showing in the 1900’s 😉 As I had the opportunity to evaluate shows this past year I noticed a portion of youth seemed unsure when to switch their animal’s feet or simply forgot (cue parents on the outside of the ring internally groaning). Here’s a little crash course on when you should be switching rear legs! Don’t forget, I’ll be doing clinics at ADX on November 4th and 5th in Syracuse, NY if you’d like to keep working on your showmanship skills!

Practicing being intentional can help make your showmanship class go better-when nerves, a heifer acting up or the uncontrollable comes in to play, muscle memory from that practice can take over!
