Yes!

We can easily get caught up in the idea that we constantly have to be teaching children, whether that’s happening formally or informally.

In the process, connection keeps getting pushed to the side. When we overdirect, overcorrect, overexpect, overcriticize, overlecture, and start talking at children instead of with them, we leave less and less space to actually get to know the child in front of us.

We need to get back to having fun with kids. Playing with them. Laughing with them. Being curious about what they’re curious about. Sitting with them. Talking with them. Letting ourselves be present instead of constantly moving on to the next thing.

And this doesn’t mean we let go of structure or our role as leaders. Those are absolutely critical. Children need steady, reliable adults and clear boundaries. But when connection leads, everything changes.

Believe it or not, what matters even more than children liking you is children truly believing that you like them. That you care about them. That you enjoy being with them. When children feel that, they open up more. They take healthy risks. They express their feelings. They engage more deeply because they feel safe with the person in front of us.

That’s what this quote is really pointing to. Learning is shaped by relationships. And when we put connection back where it belongs, learning undoubtedly follows. This should be the utmost priority. 🤍
