Is your child a Secret Singer?

You know, the one who sings in the shower because they think no one can hear them. Or maybe it's full blast in their room, as long as the door is closed?

But you can hear it, and you know they have something special to share, if they could only believe it for themself.

This fall, give your child a chance to grow their voice in a caring and open space where no sound is a bad sound and every one of them leads to the next best thing.

Nurture their voice and watch the ripple effect in how they show up in the rest of their lives.

Day 2 of “Top 10 Essential Singer Tools” week:

A Source of Pitch Reference.

For many singers, our go to is a piano or keyboard, or a guitar.

But those aren’t the only ways we can find a pitch in a pinch.

Really anything that gives you the start or basis of tonality in which you are singing, works as a reference for your practice.

Whether you’re doing scales, warm-ups, working on songs and repertoire, there is no end to where you can find reliable sources of pitch reference.

Just know that being in tune and on key, is paramount for success.

Let me know when the comments, what’s your favorite way to keep track of your sense of pitch?

😊🎶♥️ - Jess

PS: join me this Thursday on my sub sack for technique and tactics Thursday where I’ll go through the Top 10 Essential Singer Tools, and as I mentioned, there’ll be a little free gift for you, too.

This week is all about the Top 10 Singer’s Tools you just can’t live without.

So of course top of the list is, you guessed it: A Mirror 🪞.

Besides having a discerning set of extra ears to guide you on your vocal journey (ie: a teacher and/or coach), a mirror is the best tool for a singer.

Why, you ask?

Well, unlike an instrumentalist who can easily see their instrument out in front of them, a singer’s instrument is inside their body.

In fact, the singer IS the instrument.
Your whole body contributes to the sounds your voice makes.

And so, the best way to observe what is happening with your instrument in real time is in a reflection. A mirror.

For you to get the most complete picture, the mirror should show at least your head and torso, if not your whole self, however, use what you have and make it work.

Observing what is happening is very important to understand how your instrument works and what, if any, changes need to be made for optimal sound production.

Next time you are practicing, take a look in the mirror and notice how your instrument is working to produce sound.

Does it look effortful, or relaxed? Is your chin leading you to the notes? How are you standing? Who exactly is your hand waving to? (🥴 guilty!)

Remember, AWARENESS is the first step in bringing your true, authentic sound to fruition and a mirror can allow you be more aware of your instrument.

😊🎶♥️ - Jess

PS: Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever watched yourself sing in the mirror and became more aware of your instrument as a whole. How did that inform your practice going forward?
