The world was our classroom this summer. 🌍✈️

From the creative industry’s biggest stage in Cannes, to communication and culture in Barcelona, to visual storytelling across Prague, Berlin, Dresden and Vienna, SoC students took their learning far beyond campus through three unique study abroad experiences:

🇫🇷 The Cannes Lions Experience

🇪🇸 Global Communication and Social Media

🇨🇿 🇩🇪 🇦🇹 Film and Photography in Europe

Along the way, students connected with industry professionals, created work in international settings and experienced the cultures shaping communication and media around the world.

These are just three of the many ways University of Miami students took their education global this summer. Check out the University’s full story here → https://multimedia.miami.edu/canes-summer-abroad-2026

Our student journalists are making their mark across the Sunshine State! 🏆

UMTV, The Miami Hurricane and Distraction Magazine earned multiple wins and finalist honors in the Society of Professional Journalists' 2026 Sunshine State Awards, recognizing outstanding journalism across Florida.

A special congratulations to our first-place winners: Melanie Lowe of UMTV, named College Journalist of the Year; Paulina Barnjak of TMH for Commentary & Criticism; Brendan Cafferty, Camryn Greiner and Sovannreach Po of TMH for Front Page Design; and Camryn Greiner for Inside Page Design. 🙌

UMTV adviser Edward Julbe was also named a finalist for Adviser of the Year, recognizing his work supporting the next generation of broadcast journalists.

And our students weren’t only competing against their peers. The Miami Hurricane Staff was also named a finalist in a professional, non-college category, putting student-produced journalism alongside work from professional news organizations.

Congratulations to everyone behind this year’s award-winning reporting, storytelling and creative work! 👏

Professor Tiffani Knowles Senatus recently took the stage at the Scholars Equity Network's Pay It Forward Summit at the Obama Foundation Presidential Center, leading a session on building a personal brand with purpose. 🎉

As an inaugural recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, Knowles Senatus was invited to pitch a breakout session for fellow scholars and young professionals. Her session, “Main Character Energy: The Art of Personal Branding on Social Media,” focused on how intentionally building a presence on social media can strengthen credibility and help emerging corporate and community leaders shape how they show up professionally. 📲

A new academic year and a new chapter are taking shape at the SoC.

Today marks Dean Karin Wilkins’ final day at the . We celebrated her tenure and the tremendous progress made under her leadership, including the School’s rise to nearly the top 1% of communication programs nationwide. We are grateful for her seven years of leadership and wish her all the best in her next chapter.

As we look ahead, Dr. Alyse Lancaster will serve as Interim Dean. With nearly three decades of experience at the University of Miami, we are grateful for her leadership and deep knowledge of our community as she guides the School through this period of transition.

The day also brought our faculty and staff together for the SoC Retreat, where conversations centered on welcoming change, strengthening our academic programs, supporting wellness, and preparing for the year ahead. 🙌
