Over the summer 17 students from other colleges and universities came to Coral Gables to work in physics and engineering labs across our campus in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Eight of the students worked with our faculty in physics labs, like Rhianna Taub from Wayne State University who worked with astrophysics professor Joshua Gundersen in mapping cosmic structures in our solar system. Professors Olga Korotkova and Vivek Prakash also had students in the lab, like Jenna Coe who studies physics at Syracuse University and was working on understanding a simple multicellular organism, Trichoplax.

As part of a prestigious Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, 17 students spent the summer working in physics and engineering labs across the University of Miami.

University of Miami Police Chief Trevor Shinn has dedicated his career to serving the community. He spent 28 years in the North Miami Police Department and was serving as a police lieutenant in the UMPD when he enrolled in the Master of Public Administration program here in the College of Arts and Sciences.

He has since graduated from the MPA program and is taking the tools he gained there back into his everyday work life.

Water insecurity isn’t just a challenge in developing nations, it may be affecting roughly one in five U.S. households. professor Justin Stoler spoke on The Academic Minute podcast about his research exploring the “quiet water crisis” in the United States and new ways to understand how people experience water insecurity.

Stoler’s work looks beyond traditional measures like groundwater levels and water supply to consider the human experience, from being unable to wash your hands to worrying about having enough water. His research points to environmental disasters, emerging contaminants, and declining public trust as growing challenges while highlighting how better technology, affordability, and new ways of measuring water insecurity can help improve access to safe water.

A lifetime of training and performing in ballet married with a growing passion for medicine has led Nicole Kujas to pursuing Triple Cane status. Nicole graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2025 with a degree in biochemistry and nutrition and is now in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Medical Scientist Training Program on the path to a combined M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience.

For young people struggling with anxiety, effective treatment can make a meaningful difference in how they learn, interact, and navigate everyday life. psychology professor Jill Ehrenreich-May spoke on The Academic Minute podcast about her research focused on improving treatments that support the emotional needs of children and adolescents.

Ehrenreich-May’s work looks beyond the research clinic to understand how evidence-based treatments can be successfully used in schools and other community settings. Her research highlights the importance of designing these approaches around the real-world needs of young people and the communities they are intended to serve, helping effective treatments reach more children where they need them most.

A nearly six-foot-tall humanoid has joined the RoboCanes. researchers are putting the new robot to work, developing software that combines advanced robotics and AI to tackle everyday household tasks.

This summer, they were one of just 24 teams worldwide to qualify for the RoboCup@Home league, where they had the top-performing adult-sized robot and were the only team from the Americas to compete with a humanoid.

Even if you didn't venture to the movie theater this summer you're probably still aware of "The Odyssey" and its current stake in pop culture. The poem has been debated for many years, leading to the film bringing a lot of those conversations to the forefront.

One debate pits Jesus against Odysseus; some claiming the stories are fairly alike. Robyn Walsh dives into this perspective that the New Testament in the Bible has similar themes and moments between the two "hero" figures in their respective stories.

Some scholars believe Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” didn’t just inspire the new hit movie — it also shaped the stories we know about Christ.

In the United States we are preparing for the midterm elections in November but countries in Latin America have been in election cycles all year long. Five nations have already closed important elections, next up to round out the year are Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador and Haiti. Senior lecturer John Twichell, director of Latin American Studies, gives insight to the results and shifts taking place.
