Some teachers feel very shy about correcting students' mistakes - whether because of inexperience or out of fear to hurt students' feelings. Others feel way too confident about the process! Cultural background plays a huge role in terms of which error correction strategy a teacher chooses. Just to compare: most likely the most common feedback for an EFL teacher in Eastern Europe would be to use subtler error correction strategies not to inhibit fluency. The situation in the USA is the opposite: a lot of ESL teachers would undercorrect to avoid any sort of conflict or miscommunication. Correcting mistakes is our responsibility as teachers, but it should be done strategically. No two mistakes and no two students are the same!

However, just blindly putting students in pairs, without a clear goal, is hardly effective. When choosing the right set-up for the task, think about what knowledge, skills and attitude you are aiming to promote.

We are often puzzled by recycling programs in the US cities where we've lived, especially when we see a garbage truck putting regular trash and recycling together when they pick up...🤦🏼‍♀️ But at least we should all get our end of the deal right! Программы по переработке мусора организованы почти во всех крупных городах. По опыту, могу сказать, что в некоторых американских городах, где мы жили, большой пользы это не приносит: ты мусор разделяешь, а потом приезжает garbage truck и все сваливает в одну кучу🤦🏼‍♀️ но, буду надеяться, так не везде! И если там, где ты живёшь, мусор действительно перерабатывают, знать, что именно идёт на переработку, а что нет, необходимо, чтобы не просто тратить время на бесполезное раскладывание мусора в целях самоуспокоения 🕵🏼
