📱 HIPAA Quick Check: Before You Text Patient Information
Electronic communication may be convenient—but convenience doesn’t replace patient privacy.
Before sending patient information, pause and ask:
✅ Am I using a communication method approved by our practice?
✅ Have I confirmed the recipient’s identity and contact information?
✅ Am I sharing only the information needed for the intended purpose?
✅ Could someone nearby see the message or screen?
✅ Am I following our practice’s HIPAA policies?
A familiar phone number or email address doesn’t guarantee that a message is going to the right person.
When in doubt, stop and check before you send. One thoughtful pause can help protect your patient and your practice.
