It is with profound sadness that we confirm the line of duty death of Officer Elijah Garretson, badge number 118.
At our request, the Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation into an officer involved shooting that occurred on January 10, 2026, which resulted in the on-duty death of Officer Garretson. The suspect was later located, and following a lengthy negotiation attempt, the suspect took his own life.
As we begin to navigate this incredibly difficult time, we ask for understanding and patience as our department, Officer Garretson’s family, and our law enforcement family grieve this tremendous loss. Out of respect for all those affected and the ongoing investigation, no further information is being released at this time.
We ask the community to keep Officer Garretson’s loved ones and our department in their thoughts and prayers. 🕊️💙🙏🏼

This evening, a parent presented incorrect paperwork for a road test, specifically a DEE 964 form marked FOR LEARNER LICENSE ONLY. This cannot be used for the roadtest.
For scheduling a roadtest (parent taught), please provide the following:
1. A completed DEE 964 form marked FOR DRIVER LICENSE ONLY, with completion dates for the Laboratory (14hr log)and the 30 hr log with the authorized instructor's signature.
2. A fully executed IMPACT certificate signed by the student and instructor, matching the school from the DEE 964.

Please note that these documents are mandatory state requirements, and their absence will delay road test scheduling.
During the holiday season, we are still conducting 3rd Party Road Testing. If you are in the Killeen/Copperas Cove/Harker Heights/Lampasas area, please bring in your paperwork for us to review. For everyone else outside of local areas, please call us about your paperwork to streamline the process. Our number 254 238-8484 to schedule your appointment.

On Sunday, September 21, 2025, at approximately 7:27 p.m., a 911 call for a boating incident was reported at Belton Lake. A Bell County Sheriff’s Deputy was in the park at the time of the call. Temple Police and Fire Department responded to assist, along with Temple EMS.
An adult male and a minor male child were involved in the incident. Only the victim’s boat was involved. Friends of the victims who were also on the lake assisted in the initial rescue, bringing the injured victims to the boat ramp at Temple Lake Park. The adult was transported to Baylor Scott and White Medical Center, and the minor child was taken to Baylor Scott and White McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple.
Unfortunately, the adult male succumbed to his injuries. Justice of the Peace Ted Duffield has ordered an autopsy to be performed.
The incident is being investigated by both the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigation Division, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens.
At this time, the name of the victim will not be released pending full family notification and giving the family time to process the loss. The status of the minor child will not be released due to the family's request and HIPAA.
The Bell County Sheriff’s Office has the family in our thoughts and prayers.
