You watched the Master Craftsman complete in 20 minutes what took him 30 years to learn…

…and somehow concluded:

“That looks easy. I can do that.”

That may be one of the greatest illusions created by excellence.

The master doesn’t struggle with the tools because he has already struggled to master them. You see the steady hand, the precise cut, the polished result.

What you don’t see are the mistakes, wasted materials, long nights, study, failures, corrections, patience, sacrifice, and thousands of hours that trained the hand holding the tool.

Leadership works the same way.

When someone has been effective for years, we can begin to mistake their mastery for the simplicity of the assignment.

Then everybody thinks they can do the job.

But holding the tool doesn’t make you a craftsman.

Holding the title doesn’t make you a leader.

This week’s Words of Leadership examines the difference between watching mastery and possessing it.

Before saying, “I can do that,” ask yourself:

Can you reproduce the result—or have you simply watched someone so skilled that they made difficulty disappear?

Never disrespect mastery because the Master made it look easy.

**You saw the 20 minutes.

You didn’t see the 30 years.**
