📢 It's official—College Application Season for 2026–2027 is OPEN!

Seniors, this is it—time to get your application package together. And here is a friendly reminder: the application form is just one piece of the puzzle.

A strong college application is really a whole package, including:
✅ Essays (personal statement + supplements)
✅ Transcripts
✅ Test Scores (if applicable)
✅ Letters of Recommendation
✅ Resume—some schools allow you to submit one
✅ Portfolio—may be required for art, music, film, design, and architecture programs

If your student is submitting their FAFSA soon, there is a new step in the process you need to know about.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱
On April 26th, the U.S. Department of Education rolled out real-time identity fraud screening for every single FAFSA application. As soon as a student completes their section and submits, the system automatically assesses fraud risk in the background. Most students will not notice a thing.

But a portion of applicants will be flagged as "high risk." If that happens, the student is required to verify their identity, including a camera-based check completed on a smartphone or tablet, before their application can move forward. 𝗙𝗔𝗙𝗦𝗔 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗗 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆

The Department of Education is now screening every FAFSA application for fraud in real time. If your student gets flagged, they will need to verify their identity with a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID (like a driver's license, state ID, or passport) using a smartphone or tablet camera; a student ID card does NOT count.

IDs can take time to get. Do not wait until it is time to complete the FAFSA.

Do this today:
✅ Check your student's ID—is it valid and unexpired?
✅ If not, start that process now

New Federal Student Loan Rates were Officially Announced for 2026-2027!

Effective July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027, the U.S. Department of Education has released the updated fixed interest rates for federal student loans:

⬆️Direct Undergraduate Loans: 6.52%
⬆️Direct Graduate & Professional Student Loans: 8.07%
⬆️Direct Parent PLUS Loans: 9.07%

These rates are based on the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield of 4.468%. Once locked in, your rate will not change, offering stability for your financial planning.

Now’s a great time to revisit your college financing strategy and explore how these rates could impact your family’s education costs.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

When people think about the college journey, they often focus on applications, acceptance letters, scholarships, and financial decisions. But behind every checklist is something equally important: emotional well-being.

Students today are balancing academics, activities, social pressures, and big decisions about their future. Parents are managing timelines, finances, and the desire to help their child make the “right” choices. It can feel overwhelming for everyone involved.

One reminder I share with families often: there is no perfect path, and there is no prize for navigating this process under constant stress.

Take breaks. Celebrate small wins. Ask for help when you need it. Protecting mental health is just as important as planning for academic and financial success.

Because college planning is not only about preparing for the next chapter, but also about supporting the whole person along the way.
