SAT® or ACT® ? The better choice depends on the student.
The two exams differ in pacing, structure, and testing experience, which means students may find that one better matches their strengths. Rather than choosing based on what friends are taking or assuming the tests are interchangeable, students can experience both and compare their performance before committing to a preparation strategy.
UWorld supports both SAT® and ACT® preparation, allowing students to focus their efforts on the exam they choose.

"I want to drop my AP® class.”
That sentence can send a parent straight to: “But what will colleges think?”
Before you go there, find out what your teen is actually telling you. Are they struggling with the material? Overloaded across several classes? Panicking over one bad grade? Those situations don’t necessarily have the same solution.
Sometimes the next step may be better study support or a conversation with the teacher. Other times, changing the schedule may genuinely be worth discussing.
Before making the decision, talk with the teacher and school counselor and understand what changing the course would mean academically and for AP® Exam plans.

AP® exams may offer a payoff parents don’t always consider: college costs.
A qualifying AP® Exam score may earn your student college credit, advanced placement, or both, depending on the college.
That could mean entering college with credits already earned, skipping certain introductory courses, or even having more flexibility in how long it takes to complete a degree.
And when fewer semesters are needed? There can be real tuition savings. But there’s an important catch:
Every college sets its own AP® credit and placement policy.

One school may award credit for a particular score while another handles the same score differently. So when your family is comparing colleges, don’t just check tuition. Check the AP® credit policy too!

Your teen can take an AP® class. But should they? Those are two different questions.
AP® courses can be a great way for students to challenge themselves and go deeper in subjects they’re ready for. But the right AP® schedule depends on the student, the subject, their preparation, and everything else already competing for their time.

And once your teen chooses an AP® course, make sure they have the right support to keep up with it. UWorld AP® resources can help students learn concepts, practice AP-style questions, and track their progress throughout the year.
The goal isn’t the most APs. It’s the right APs!

“AP® pathway” sounds like something you should already understand as a high school parent.
It’s simpler than it sounds.
Think of it as planning which AP® courses make sense for your teen in high school based on their interests, readiness, goals, and what their school actually offers. AP® can also earn college credit, saving money in the bigger picture.

An AP® plan asks:
Is my teen interested?
Are they ready?
Does the course fit their goals?
Can they realistically manage the workload?

Once they’ve picked their APs, UWorld can help with the next part: keeping up with them all year with AP-aligned learning and practice!

Application deadline season has a way of making every unfinished task feel like an emergency.
An essay needs one more edit. A recommendation hasn’t been submitted. One college has an extra supplement nobody noticed until today. And suddenly your senior is convinced they’re never going to finish!

This is where parents can help most by making the process feel smaller.
-Check the actual requirements. Figure out what’s still missing. Prioritize the next task. Offer another set of eyes when needed. But resist the urge to become their unpaid admissions coordinator.

-The goal is to help them move forward, not take over. Sometimes the best question isn’t “Are you done yet?” It’s “What’s the next thing you can finish?”

Senior parents, how’s application season going in your house?

Your sophomore is taking the PSAT®. How seriously should your family take it?
Serious enough to make it useful.

Not so serious that Tuesday dinner becomes a discussion about percentile rankings. For most sophomores, the PSAT® can be a useful early checkpoint: experience the test format, identify strengths and gaps, and get a clearer idea of what future SAT® prep may need to focus on.

And one important distinction for parents: for students on the traditional four-year high school path, sophomore-year PSAT®/NMSQT scores generally don’t count for National Merit entry. That typically comes with the junior-year PSAT®/NMSQT.

If you think the PSAT is just a practice SAT®... there’s one thing junior parents should know.

The PSAT®/NMSQT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
That doesn’t mean one great score automatically equals scholarship money. National Merit is a multi-stage competition with additional eligibility and participation requirements.
But it does mean the test can carry a little more significance for eligible juniors than the word “practice” suggests.
So yes, encourage your teen to prepare!

Did you know about the PSAT®/ NMSQT and National Merit connection?

October looks very different depending on what grade your teen is in.

The easiest way to make college prep overwhelming is to worry about everything at once.
Focus on what matters for your teen right now and keep the next important dates somewhere the whole family can actually see them.

Which grade are you parenting this year?

Think your family makes too much for financial aid? Don’t make that decision for yourself.
There’s no single income cutoff that determines whether every family will qualify for aid. FAFSA® information can also be used by states, colleges, and some scholarship programs when determining eligibility!

So even if you’re fairly certain your family won’t qualify, filing can still be worth it. Because “we probably won’t qualify” is an assumption. And assumptions are a pretty expensive reason to leave potential college aid unexplored.
