Nursery Rhymes and More Build Phonological Awareness!

Phonological awareness (PA) is the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken words—an essential skill for preschool literacy. Activities that support PA include rhyming, singing, and sound games that build auditory processing skills.

To enhance listening skills, have children close their eyes while you make different sounds (e.g., a bell, footsteps, running water, animal sounds). Create matching games using sound shakers—small bottles filled with items like pennies, rice, or sand—so students can find the pairs.

Rhyming is a key PA skill. Explain that rhyming words have the same ending sound. Read nursery rhymes and have students signal when they hear a rhyme (thumbs up, clap, jump, etc.). Pause before the rhyming word and let them say it, or encourage them to create their own rhymes, real or nonsense!
