Take a look inside our elementary summer program, where incoming kindergarten through fifth-grade students spent their summer learning and growing. Each day brought a mix of academic enrichment and exciting activities designed to keep students engaged. Our incoming kindergarten students also got a special head start on their elementary school journey, becoming familiar with school routines and classroom expectations before September.

What’s your favorite memory as a student here?
One of my favorite memories as a student here was the sense of community, especially during spirit weeks and school events where everyone came together. There was always a strong feeling of pride in being a Copiague Eagle. I remember all the teachers who encouraged me to do my best and made me feel supported.

What made you come back to work in the district?
This school district played such an important role in my life, both academically and personally. I came back because I wanted to give students the same sense of support, opportunity, and belonging that I experienced.

What’s your favorite part of your job now?
My favorite part of my job is building relationships with students and watching them grow over their four years. Whether it’s celebrating their achievements, supporting them through challenges, or seeing them walk across the graduation stage, those moments never get old. I also love being part of a team that is deeply committed to our students’ success.

What advice would you give to current students?
The advice I would give to my current students is to get involved, take chances, and advocate for yourself. High school goes by faster than you think. Take time to build relationships with your teachers and don’t be afraid to try something new. Most importantly, enjoy the experience and take pride in being part of the Copiague community.

Copiague School District has appointed Karilyn Korec as its new assistant superintendent for finance and operations, effective Aug. 1.
Since joining the Copiague School District in 2021, Ms. Korec has served as district treasurer and, most recently, as assistant business administrator. From 2017-2021, she worked as an accountant for the Bayport-Blue Point School District.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as assistant superintendent for finance and operations,” she said. “I look forward to providing strategic fiscal leadership, promoting transparency and collaboration, and ensuring that every financial decision supports the district's commitment to educational excellence and student achievement.”
Ms. Korec holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from St. Joseph’s University and a master’s degree in business administration from the College of St. Rose. Additionally, she has advanced certifications in organizational leadership/change management and school district business leader from the College of St. Rose.

Copiague students enrolled in the elementary summer program are staying active while developing important physical, social and creative skills through engaging music and movement classes tailored to each grade level.
Incoming kindergartners are being introduced to foundational musical concepts through interactive lessons that encourage exploration and self-expression with Mr. Maebert. Students are learning to distinguish between loud and quiet sounds, respond to fast and slow tempos through movement, and build a sense of rhythm using rhythm sticks and egg shakers. These activities help strengthen listening skills, coordination and musical confidence while preparing them for the kindergarten classroom.
For grades one through five, Mrs. Capuana’s movement class offers a fun, high-energy environment where fitness and teamwork take center stage. Students begin each class by learning the importance of stretching to keep their bodies strong, flexible and healthy. They also participate in cooperative movement games that promote collaboration, communication and active play.
In addition, students are learning guided dance routines that enhance coordination, rhythm and self-confidence, while encouraging them to stay active throughout the summer.

Copiague School District’s youngest learners are getting a head start on the school year during the elementary summer program, designed to help incoming students transition confidently into elementary school this fall.
Throughout the program, students are becoming familiar with the routines and expectations they will experience when school begins in September. They practice everyday skills such as navigating the cafeteria line, learning bus safety procedures, following classroom routines and building independence.
In addition to preparing for the daily structure of school, students are participating in engaging academic activities that introduce foundational literacy and math concepts while encouraging curiosity and a love of learning. With fall just around the corner, Copiague’s newest learners are already working together, sharing, communicating and becoming part of the school community.

Creativity was on full display in the district as students in the elementary summer school program explored their artistic talents through a series of engaging, hands-on art projects.
During their lessons, students designed colorful dream catchers, learning about patterns, symmetry and creative expression while crafting unique works of art. They also reached for the stars by creating imaginative rocket ships, combining artistic techniques with creativity to bring their designs to life.
The projects provided students with opportunities to strengthen fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities and self-expression while having fun in a collaborative learning environment.

Fifth graders in Ms. Spadaro’s class at Great Neck Road Elementary School recently combined creativity, technology and storytelling skills by designing their own original comic strips.
After studying graphic texts, students learned how this unique format uses a combination of words and illustrations to tell a story. They explored how this type of narrative includes a beginning, middle and end, with panels helping move the plot forward and dialogue appearing through speech bubbles. Students also discovered how illustrations play an important role in developing the characters and setting and advancing the storyline.
Using Canva, an online graphic design tool, fifth graders created their own digital comics while learning how to design images and add animation elements. Each student used their imagination to develop a storyline and bring their ideas to life through visual storytelling.
To conclude the project, students presented their completed comics to their classmates, sharing their creative choices and the stories they created. The activity allowed the class to strengthen their writing, technology, communication and artistic skills while exploring a new way to express themselves.
