This is the time of year.
The time when we set the stage for the magic to happen, when the secret sauce is stirred.
There are relaxed moments like our staff potluck brunch where all our teachers from across the program get to be together to connect and fellowship.
But it's also days of training where we lead with our mission, review of safety policies, invest in professional development and plan for the year ahead.
It's a flurry of behind the scenes work so that the year can start as smoothly as possible.
When you see your teacher (and administrators) in the coming weeks, know that they have been eagerly preparing for your arrival in ways you will never see but that provide the secure foundation for an exciting year ahead.
2026-2027 here we come!

Every summer the staff at PHA read a book together about the Charlotte Mason philosophy of education.

This summer we are reading two books from the Charlotte Mason Centenary Series.
"In anticipation of the occasion of the Charlotte Mason centenary, 24 scholars from three countries came together, and collectively authored 18 individual monographs—short books, if you will—analyzing aspects of the continued relevance of Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy, practice, life, and leadership. "

Our staff will be reading "The Inherent Generosity Within a Charlotte Mason Education and a Practical Theory of Joy" and
"A Feast of Living Ideas in a World of Bytes: Welcoming Charlotte Mason into the Digital Age."

Consider reading along with us!

"... Point to some lovely flower or gracious tree, not only as beautiful, but a beautiful thought of God, in which we may believe He finds continual pleasure, and which He is pleased to see his human children rejoice in.”

It brings us such joy when children catch the wonder in creation and feel the draw as it pulls them toward their creator. This is why we continue to prioritize outdoor education. You cannot teach of a beautiful world without making sure to get out into it and experiencing it first hand.

Hi! In case we haven't met, we're Providence Hybrid Academy! (Or PHA for short. It is a mouthful.🙂 )
Here's a little bit about us. We've been around 9 years! Our foundation of education is based on three basic principles: honor God, honor family and honor childhood.

Honoring God
As we work with children, we desire to show them they have a unique calling and purpose and encourage them to know the God who created them. In our academics, whether it is history or music or math, we seek to point our students to a God who is the ultimate creator and has a grandly orchestrated story for humanity.

Honoring Families
We recognize that family is the most crucial component of a child's development, and we have designed our program so that families and teachers can work hand-in-hand in order to best meet the developmental needs of our students. The hybrid approach encourages families in their ability to teach their children with assigned work for home days and ideas for how to approach their child's learning style.

Honoring Childhood
Children are naturally curious and born learners. We believe their academic development is best served by valuing the stage of development they are in rather than making inappropriate academic demands. This means allowing time for unstructured free play and a play-based kindergarten. This also means we are committed to exposing children to a "feast" of academic disciplines, including art, music, drama, poetry, and nature study. We allow students' observations to guide our lessons and encourage students to think creatively and critically about the world around them. Likewise, we recognize the positive mental, emotional, and physical benefits of time in nature and allow students time to play and study outdoors.

Sometimes there is a mistaken idea that to be a living book it has to be old. That just isn't the case! While there are wonderful classic books that will always be valuable there are contemporary authors that feel like kindred spirits of the greats.
Thornton Burgess has many wonderful nature tales that continue to be popular and have been republished many times. (If you can find an older edition with all the color illustrations, you'll be lucky indeed!)
James Witmer's Big Old Garden Stories are a wonderful recently published living books that feel like a cross between Thornton Burgess and Beatrix Potter.
Wonderful read aloud to nearly any age, and a great independent read for second grade and up (depending on reading level).

This week a group of our teachers and staff had the opportunity to attend the CMEC summer retreat!
The Charlotte Mason Educational Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering parents and teachers to apply the philosophy of British educator Charlotte Mason. Their mission is to positively impact culture by providing a K-12 curriculum and training resources that cultivate wonder, good habits, a love of knowledge, and a magnanimous spirit in students.
All of us who attended felt a new excitement and empowerment in our application of the Charlotte Mason philosophy at PHA. We also had the fun of being students ourselves as we sang hymns and folk songs, attended an outdoor nature study session and tried out handicrafts.
