Our Story
Blended syrups being labelled and marketed as pure sorghum had troubled sorghum syrup produces for a long period of time to the point,that it began a major concern in the 1970’s. Leonard Maasdam started a newsletter “The Sweet Sorghum Press” as a forum to address this and other issues facing the sweet sorghum industry. He published news that an educational meeting on sorghum syrup production was being held in Manchester, Tennessee. Upon reading about the meeting sixty-five people showed up for what was the first unofficial meeting.
In March 1986 the National Sweet Sorghum Producers & Processors Association was chartered with twelve charter members, and the members have met annually since the beginning.
The Association is a not for profit organization, which is tax exempt and has a registered certification mark (logo). Its unofficial motto is “Supporting the Sweet Sorghum Industry by Being Its Voice”.
The Association’s purposes are: 1) mechanism for communication among sorghum producers, 2) mechanism to express common concerns of the members, 3) provide education and information related to sweet sorghum, 4) act as an advisory board, 5) develop standards for sweet sorghum quality, and 6) facilitate continuing development of the sweet sorghum industry.
