“If I had to give up preaching and my other duties, there is no office I would rather have than that of school teacher.

For I know that next to the ministry it is the most useful, greatest, and best; and I am not sure which of the two is to be preferred.

For it is hard to make old dogs docile and old rogues pious, yet that is what the ministry works at, and must work at, in great part, in vain; but young trees, though some may break in the process, are more easily bent and trained.

Therefore let it be considered one of the highest virtues on earth faithfully to train the children of others.”

-Martin Luther (1483-1546) from exposition of Book of Titus sermon, Duty of Sending Children to School

“This conversation is an invitation to see education differently: not simply as the transfer of information, but as the formation of loves, desires, imagination, and ultimately, the human soul.”

What if the goal of education isn't simply to teach our children what is good, but to help them love what is good?

In this week's new episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens talks with author and educator Heidi White about how the stories our children encounter shape their imaginations, desires, and understanding of what it means to be human.

They explore why great literature is about far more than academics, why parents don't need to extract a moral lesson from every story, and how asking better questions can open the door to meaningful conversations with our children.

What reasons are parents giving for why they chose to homeschool their children?

The institute's summary of the most common motivations includes:

> Tailoring the curriculum and the learning environment to the individual child

> Getting further academically than a school can typically manage

> Using teaching approaches a classroom cannot easily accommodate

> Family relationships

> Supervised time with other children

> Physical safety

> Passing on a particular set of values and beliefs

"A family starting this year is more likely to be doing it because a child reads three years ahead and was bored, or two years behind and was drowning, than because of anything a school board voted on."

"Its own description of the group runs across nearly every line an outsider would expect it to fall on: atheists and churchgoers, conservatives and liberals, low and high income, parents with doctorates alongside parents who never finished high school. Ask a room of homeschooling parents why they started, and you will get a dozen answers that have nothing to do with each other."

An estimated 3.4 million American children are being taught at home this year. That is the National Home Education Research Institute's count for 2024 to 2025, inside a range it gives as 3.067 million to 3.749 million. For scale, the institute sets that against about 1.684 million children in Cathol...

“If our schools really wanted to prepare our children for life, they would offer classes in failure and disappointment.

Our kids may never need to know algebra or chemistry in their adult lives, but they will definitely need to know how to handle failure and disappointment.”

We live in a “success culture” that idolizes victory and fulfillment. But it’s all so unreal.

"Sadly, sometimes parents sacrifice a truly good education for a poorly defined good education. Sometimes the push to get what the academic world calls a good education puts children at risk spiritually. What God calls good can be far different from what the parent hears is good from common sources."
