Writers of high school age in Tennessee: you’re invited to the inaugural Wings Up Writing Workshop! Parents and educators, please help us spread the word.

The Wings Up Writing Workshop will be held at Tennessee Tech on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 8:30am-3:00pm. The Creative Writing faculty of the Tennessee Tech English Department will be on campus for an interactive and engaging day of learning, writing, and conversation. This is the place for aspiring poets, novelists, essayists, and short story writers to learn more about what a career as an author and teacher might look like.

Any high school students with a spark for creative writing are encouraged to apply. The Wings Up Writing Workshop is free for students, and it includes lunch and an optional campus tour.

Eyerusaleam Kassahun Ayele visited Tennessee Tech and met with English faculty at the PLENTY Downtown Bookshop in Cookeville (Saturday, May 30). She conversed about her new research projects on the subject of Ethiopian cinema. Eyerusaleam has already published scholarly work about Ethiopia's movie industry, and she was also the writer/producer/director for the romantic comedy Traffic Cop, a movie that was a commercial success in Ethiopia in 2013. She is currently working on her PhD in media and film studies at the University of Michigan. (Pictured here with English Department chair Dr. Steven Thomas.)

Congratulations to Tennessee Tech’s four Southern Literary Festival Competition winners, Ainslee Davenport, Katie Nelson, Hailey Winningham, and Sarah Keen. These undergraduate students represented Tennessee Tech at the 2026 Southern Literary Festival Competition, held at UT Chattanooga. Winners traveled to the conference with creative writing professor Dr. Ted Pelton.
