I just found out that the first episode of Mary Beard's new series, "Ultimate Rome: Empire Without Limit," aired on BBC 2 last Wednesday. It is available on Youtube. Two of my favorite scholars, Mary Beard and Anthony Grafton, are featured in this Podcast, "Why the Classics Matter." Beard discusses Cicero, Caesar, and some of the great characters from her new book SPQR. SPQR is short for "The Senate and People of Rome," and you will see it often in Rome. Tony Grafton tells the story of a rapidly growing group of students who began learning how to speak (not just read) Latin from a charismatic curmudgeon of a priest in Rome. Enjoy.
