The Federal Aviation Administration just hit a major hiring milestone, and their new recruits did not come from aviation school.

In April, the Department of Transportation launched a campaign aimed squarely at video gamers, targeting platforms like Fortnite and Roblox to find candidates for one of the most high pressure jobs in the country. The pitch was simple. The same skills gamers build for fun, like multitasking, spatial awareness, and quick decision making under pressure, translate directly to guiding real planes through the sky.

It worked. As of this week, the FAA has hired more than 2,000 gamers as air traffic controllers, reaching 94 percent of its hiring goal faster than any class in the agency's history.

The push comes as the country faces a serious controller shortage. The US currently has around 11,000 active air traffic controllers, but staffing has dropped roughly 6 percent over the past decade while flight volume has climbed 10 percent. The agency says it is still thousands of controllers short of its target levels.

To speed things up, the government raised starting pay by 30 percent and streamlined the hiring process so qualified applicants move through faster than ever before.

Getting hired is only step one. Candidates still have to pass a background check, medical exam, drug test, psychological evaluation, and a nearly four hour cognitive skills test before even reaching the FAA Academy. From there, training takes one to three years, and historically only about 2 percent of applicants make it all the way to certification.

For thousands of young gamers, all those hours at the controller were apparently not wasted after all.

Pando may look like a forest, but it's actually a single tree. 🌳

This quaking aspen colony, whose name means "I spread" in Latin, has 47,000 stems spreading over 106 acres in Utah. All of them share the same DNA and are connected by one enormous root system. It weighs an estimated 13 million pounds (about 6,000 metric tons), making it the heaviest known living organism.

Its exact age is debated, but recent studies estimate Pando is between 16,000 and 80,000 years old. It has survived through ice ages, climate shifts, and centuries of human change, quietly regenerating new trunks from its ancient roots.

A forest that is really one being—older than most civilisations, heavier than any other life on Earth. 🌿✨

In March 2019, marine biologists in Florida held a mother dolphin and her seven-month-old calf side by side in shallow water while they cut fishing line that had sliced a third of the way through the calf's tail and bridled through its mouth like a horse's bit. They held the mother because letting her go during the procedure would have caused more stress to the calf than the surgery itself. The two dolphins whistled to each other the entire time they were held.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium's rescue team had been watching the pair since December. Three months of monitoring from boats, photographing the calf's condition at distance, attempting to cut the line remotely while the animals were free-swimming. None of it worked. The fishing line was monofilament, nearly invisible in the water, and it was tightening. As the seven-month-old grew, the line that had wrapped around its tail and threaded through its mouth cut deeper into tissue that was expanding against it. By March, veterinarians consulting with NOAA Fisheries determined the entanglement would kill the calf if nobody went in.

On March 11, a collaborative team from Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, and NOAA deployed a net near Englewood on the Gulf Coast. They caught both animals together in a single capture. The decision to take the mother was not accidental. A seven-month-old dolphin calf separated from its mother during a stressful event will panic, thrash, and risk injuring itself worse than the entanglement. A calf held beside its mother stays calmer because the one thing it needs most in the world is right there.

The team worked in shallow water near a stand of mangroves. Biologists held both dolphins close together while the veterinary team examined the calf. The line had cut roughly a third of the way through each blade of the calf's tail fluke. It had also looped through the mouth, slicing into the tissue where the jaws meet and cutting into the gum of the upper jaw. The calf had been swimming, feeding, and keeping up with its mother for three months with a line sawing through its tail and a bridle pulling through its face.

While the team cut the line and pulled it through, the mother and calf exchanged whistles. Bottlenose dolphin mothers and calves develop individually recognizable signature whistles within the first few months of life. The mother's whistle tells the calf who she is. The calf's whistle tells the mother where it is. In the shallow water near the mangroves, held by gloved hands a few feet apart, both animals were calling to each other with the specific sounds that meant I am here and I am here too. The biologists could hear it. NOAA's account described the exchange directly: the pair exchanged whistles with each other as they were held.

The team removed all the monofilament, administered a long-acting antibiotic injection, took body measurements, and collected a blood sample. The entire procedure was conducted in the water. Neither animal was lifted onto a boat or taken to a facility. When the team released them, the mother and calf swam off together into the deeper water of the estuary, emitting whistle sounds as they went. FWC reported the pair looked good and strong.

Researchers just captured Earth's seafloor ripping open and forming new ocean crust.

Deep beneath the southern Indian Ocean, an international team of researchers has captured the first-ever direct, real-time observation of a seafloor spreading event—the elusive geological process that continuously builds Earth's crust.

Deploying an advanced array of underwater microphones, pressure sensors, and geodetic beacons along the Southeast Indian Ridge, scientists had their instruments in place just two months before tectonic plates abruptly tore apart.

The sudden event caused the seafloor to drop about 13 feet (4 meters) and separated the plates by more than 3 feet (1 meter), triggering an eruption of up to 160 million cubic meters of lava. This single active episode released nearly 40 years' worth of accumulated tectonic strain in just days.

Beyond documenting a rare geological spectacle, the real-time data solved a long-standing mystery regarding plate tectonics. For decades, scientists wondered why mid-ocean ridges produced far fewer earthquakes than expected given the scale of plate movement. The sensors revealed that the vast majority of the tectonic shifting did not occur during the seismic tremors. Instead, after the initial rocky fractures, much of the seafloor shifted silently and aseismically, driven by magma rising quietly beneath the surface. This breakthrough discovery provides a ground-truth benchmark for how the oceanic crust—which forms about two-thirds of the planet's surface—continually reshapes itself in the deep ocean.
