Hendrix College student Zeihkia Byrd ’21, a biochemistry/molecular biology major from Maumelle, Arkansas, has won an award for her oral presentation in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology category at the 2020 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students. Hendrix student Zach Steed ’23 has a pretty cool answer to the question, “How’d you spend your pandemic summer?” He worked with mentors at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) on Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Research for Social Change, a research experience for undergrads through UT Austin. In addition to developing Python script, Zach analyzed Twitter data surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic to find more effective ways to uncover bots and fake accounts that were spreading false and potentially dangerous information. And he's been selected to return to the program as a mentor in summer 2021!
“Despite working with people and machines 600 miles away, I was still able to complete fulfilling research and make lifelong connections,” he said. “It was amazing to be able to apply what I had learned at Hendrix to research that reached such a broad audience.”

Hendrix College Board of Trustees voted today to adjust fall opening plans and begin the semester remotely in order to keep students, faculty, and staff safe in the wake of dramatic increases in COVID-19 cases.
