Artifact of the week: a photo from the Bill Nutter Historic Slide Show. Before refrigeration, locals kept things cool with block ice from Standard Ice. The Museum recently acquired an ice bag and pick from Dr. Terry Fiddler. Standard Ice is now the Toad Store.

Artifact of the Week:

This coming weekend, the UCA Bears will travel to Tallahassee to play the Florida State Seminoles in Doak Campbell Stadium, and there is a little known Conway connection.

This book in our library collection was written by Doak Campbell in 1935 while he was a professor at George Peabody College. Prior to that, in the 1920s, Campbell served as president of Central College for Women (where Central Baptist College is now located).

In 1941, Campbell was named as president of Florida State College for Women. In 1947, the college began accepting men, and changed its name to Florida State University.

Campbell served as president at FSU until 1957 and passed away in 1973. The football stadium is named in his honor.

Got a couple of free hours? The Museum is need of volunteer door greeters to welcome visitors. We are open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-4 and are currently scheduling door greeters in two-hour blocks: 10-12 or 12-2 but we are flexible if there's a time that better fits your schedule. Come by and sign up! 801 Locust at FC Courthouse Square.

Artifact of the Week: Here’s a photo of the 64/65 Motel and Cafe that used to be on Harkrider by the “Y.” Today you know this spot as the entrance to the Walmart Supercenter. Photo from Bill Nutter’s Old Conway slide collection that was recently digitized by AV Transfer for the museum.
