What a Week at Geology & Rock Camp!

Our first week of summer camp was filled with adventure, discovery, friendship, and wonder!

This week we:
Dug for rocks, fossils, and even discovered megalodon teeth
Hammered open geodes to reveal the treasures hidden inside
Rescued a quail
Met a beautiful green rough snake and learned to appreciate a creature that some of us were a little nervous about
Took nature walks with our goats
Held chickens and cared for farm animals
Welcomed a brand new baby goat who arrived during water play!
Explored nature and searched for bugs
Completed a geology scavenger hunt with Ms. Kelly
Carved soapstone and created beautiful necklaces
Turned our shark teeth and special stones into keepsake necklaces with Ms. Lexi

A special thank you to Sarah Nicole and Hance for joining us this week! They shared part of their incredible rock and crystal collection, taught us how rocks are formed, why they come in different colors, and introduced us to crystal singing bowls.

The children practiced breathwork, learned ways to regulate their emotions, listened to the soothing sounds of the bowls, and even had the opportunity to play them themselves.
Of course, no summer camp week would be complete without daily water play, popsicles, laughter, muddy shoes, and plenty of time exploring the outdoors.

Perhaps the most important thing we discovered this week wasn't hidden in the rocks at all—it was courage. We watched children try new things, overcome fears, ask questions, make friends, and develop a deeper connection with nature and themselves.

Thank you to all of our campers, families, volunteers, and special guests for helping make Week 1 such a memorable
adventure.

Enjoy this look back at Geology & Rock Camp! ❤️

Every School Needs a Safe Place

Today we are excited to officially launch Mindful Journey Academy's Building Campaign!

For years, our students have learned and grown on our 18-acre farm and forest campus—reading, writing, exploring nature, caring for animals, creating art, gardening, and building meaningful connections with the world around them.

Now we are working toward an important next step.

We are raising funds for a modular emergency shelter and indoor learning space that will support student safety, weather preparedness, and year-round learning.

This is not about building a new school.

Our students already attend school here every day.

This project is about providing a safe place for children during severe weather, emergencies, and unsafe outdoor conditions while continuing the outdoor education that makes our school so special.

To help get this project started, I personally contributed $5,000, and our amazing community raised an additional $1,500 through our Clucky Derby Fundraiser.

Because of that support, we have already raised:
💚 $6,500 of our $51,000 goal💚 13% funded💚 $44,500 remaining

Every donation, sponsorship, and share helps move this project forward.
Whether you give $5, $10, $25, $51, $250, or simply help spread the word, you are helping create a safer future for the children we serve.
Thank you for believing in nature-based education, childhood, and community.

Visit our Building Campaign page to learn more and donate.

Mindful Journey Academy, Inc. is raising $51,000 to purchase and install a modular classroom building. $18,500 raised so far — 36% toward our goal. Help us provide a safe shelter for students. Donate today.

Sometimes the best way to get to know a school is simply to walk through it. 🌿

At MJA, we invite prospective families to come experience the rhythms of our school day firsthand — to step into the classrooms, observe the learning environment, and feel the warmth and connection that make our community so special.

A school tour is more than just seeing a building. It’s an opportunity to imagine your child learning, growing, creating, and belonging here.

Come see:
✨ Our beautiful learning spaces
✨ Hands-on, developmentally appropriate education
✨ The joy and rhythm of daily school life
✨ A nurturing community centered around the whole child

If you’ve been wondering whether MJA could be the right fit for your family, we would love to welcome you for a visit.

Schedule a tour through the link in our bio, our website www.mindfuljourneyacademy.org or send us a message to learn more. 💛

There is something modern childhood is losing.
Silence.
Wonder.
Boredom.
Time.
Many children today move from screen to activity to schedule with almost no pause in between. Every moment is filled. Every silence interrupted. Every car ride occupied.

But research is beginning to show what many educators and parents are quietly noticing:
Children actually need downtime.
Studies on boredom and child development suggest that unstructured time helps children develop creativity, problem-solving, imagination, and cognitive flexibility. When children are not constantly entertained, something beautiful begins to happen — they begin creating from within. https://www.buildingbrains.ca/blog/the-science-behind-boredom-why-kids-need-down-time?utm_source=chatgpt.com

A stick becomes a fishing pole. A tree becomes a castle. A puddle becomes an entire afternoon.
At Mindful Journey Academy, we believe:Childhood should not be rushed.
Children need time to wander outdoors, invent games, build forts, climb trees, dig in the dirt, and simply wonder.
Not every moment needs to be optimized.
Sometimes the most important learning happens in the spaces adults almost overlook: feeding animals, mixing mud, watching insects, helping in the garden, sitting quietly beneath a tree.
Attention grows slowly through meaningful experience.
Imagination grows in the presence of spaciousness.
A child who climbs trees is learning.
And perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can offer children today is not more entertainment… but more room to become fully human.
At MJA we offer this time after lunch. If you visit you will see children in hammocks, in the garden and more.

In a world where everything is instant, on-demand, and always “on,” boredom has become a dreary word. For many families, a bored child feels like a crisis, something to fix with a screen, an activity, or another app. But what if we told you that boredom isn’t a problem to solve but a vital dev...

Children were never meant to grow up entirely indoors.
Research continues to show that time spent in nature supports healthier childhood development in powerful ways. Studies suggest that children who regularly play outdoors are often happier, more attentive, less anxious, more creative, and emotionally healthier. https://childmind.org/article/why-kids-need-to-spend-time-in-nature/
Nature does something screens and walls cannot.
Outdoors, children move differently. Breathe differently. Think differently.

A child balancing on a log is developing coordination, focus, confidence, and resilience. A child watching clouds drift across the sky is practicing quiet attention. A child feeding animals, climbing trees, gardening, or wandering a trail is building relationship with the living world.

At Mindful Journey Academy, nature is not a “special activity.”
It is part of daily life. We believe children need:mud on their boots, wind in their hair, real responsibility, deep play, and time outdoors that is not rushed or overly directed. The natural world slows children down in the best possible way. And in a culture moving faster and faster, we believe protecting childhood matters more than ever.
Come visit us. See what is different.

They may prefer to stick to their screens, but here's why getting children outdoors matters - spending time in nature for mental health.
