One month into the school year, you may be noticing more about your child’s communication skills. However, speech and language concerns can become apparent both at home and in the school environment.

You may notice difficulty with expressive language, such as communicating wants and needs, formulating sentences, or organizing thoughts. Other children may demonstrate challenges with receptive language, including understanding questions, following directions, or processing verbal information. Concerns may also involve speech sound production, intelligibility, fluency, social communication, or overall functional communication.

Speech and language development begins well before a child enters the classroom. Children as young as age 2 and beyond may benefit from speech-language services when communication skills are not developing as expected or are affecting their ability to participate successfully in daily routines, learning, and social interactions.
