Struggling to feel proud of your achievements, always thinking they fall short? ๐ค
What's that inner voice of doubt whispering to you?
๐ง These questions all point to how we perceive ourselves, which is crucial to emotional intelligence.
๐ช Understanding and valuing your strengths and weaknesses is what self-regard is all about. It's about being as compassionate with yourself as you would with a friend. Lack of it makes life feel more challenging.
๐ง Many strive for perfection, harshly critiquing every mistake. This fear could prevent us from trying new things or voicing our thoughts, becoming our greatest barrier.
๐ฑ But here's a brighter side: growth blooms when we dare to leave our comfort zones. It involves embracing who we are, trying new things, and learning from each experience, rather than fearing failure.
๐ Picture yourself making decisions with confidence and accepting your path, imperfections and all. It begins with changing how you view yourself.
๐ค Remember, you're not in this alone. Support from mentors, coaches, or taking time for self-reflection can significantly aid your journey towards better self-awareness.

I wanted to share a recent experience that made me reflect on the valuable lessons leaders can learn from handling mistakes and setbacks.
Last week, I took some time off and attended the Formula 1 race weekend in Austin, Texas. After the race concluded, I was surprised to learn that seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton had been disqualified after finishing second place. They had an issue with the car that didn't meet the rules during the post-race inspection. What struck me most about this incident was Lewis Hamilton's response and his exemplary approach to the situation.
Instead of blaming the team or dwelling on the disqualification, Lewis Hamilton displayed the qualities of a leader. He recognized the collective effort of the entire team that had brought them to where they were rather than focusing on the specific technical rule they failed to meet during the inspection. He also emphasized looking forward and learning from the team's progress.
In his own words, Hamilton said, "We can be happy with many things. I feel positive as weโre moving forward, even if reflecting on it we could have possibly won today. It is of course disappointing to be disqualified post-race but that doesnโt rake away from the progress weโve made this weekend."
As a leader and a coach, I believe there is much we can learn from this event. While it's natural to feel disappointment when faced with setbacks, it's crucial that we maintain a forward-looking perspective. Rather than dwelling on mistakes, focus on what we can learn from them and how we can continue moving forward.
In our journey, it's essential that we acknowledge the collective efforts of our team, just as Lewis Hamilton did, and strive to foster an environment where learning and growth are at the forefront of our endeavors.
Let's keep in mind the valuable lesson Lewis Hamilton's response teaches us as we face our own challenges and setbacks in the future. Embrace each experience as an opportunity to learn and improve and keep moving forward towards your goals.

In a candid career planning conversation, one individual I worked with directed a comment at me: 'You're someone who always lays your cards on the table, aren't you?' It was an interesting comment: I hold my cards close many times, which is a personal preference. But here's the twist โ that's not always the case. When and how you reveal your career goals is a strategic choice in high-stakes career advancement discussions.
Do you share your ambitions openly with your current employer or a trusted mentor, or keep them close to your chest? The answer isn't black and white. After the conversation I shared above occurred, I wrote an article, which I have linked below. I explored the art of disclosure and the nuanced factors that can come into play in our decisions to have shallow or in-depth discussions of our future career aspirations.

Will leading by example be sufficient to influence my teamโs actions as I expect, or should I also communicate my expectations explicitly?
Leading by example is a great leadership approach, but it may not ensure that your team members always act as you expect them to. Here's why:
Clarity of what you expect: Setting a positive example with your actions can establish a tone and role model for behavior, but it's equally crucial to effectively communicate your expectations to your team to minimize misunderstandings and misinterpretations.
Individual Differences: People have different communication styles, work habits, and interpretations of what constitutes exemplary behavior. Some team members may not fully grasp the nuances of your actions and how they relate to their own roles unless you explicitly articulate your expectations.
Feedback and Guidance: Leading by example is a passive leadership approach, which can offer inspiration and motivation but may lack the guidance some team members require to meet your expectations. Providing consistent feedback and coaching can help individuals identify areas for improvement and learn how to enhance their performance.
Situational Factors: There may be situations or contexts where leading by example isn't enough. Team members might encounter unique challenges or uncertainties that require specific guidance or decisions from a leader.
Leading by example is an essential component of effective leadership, but it should be complemented by clear communication of expectations, regular feedback, and individualized guidance as needed. The combination of these approaches is likely to yield the best results in terms of ensuring that your team acts in alignment with your expectations.

Are you an active listener?
Here are a couple of things to think about as you answer this. Do you listen intending to react or speak as soon as possible, or are you the type that generally can relate to the speakerโs emotions? What about paying attention deeply with full attention, or are you working on the computer or phone? These are some areas to consider when developing your active listening skills.
Here are a few tips to work on to develop your active listening skills.
1. Fight the urge to listen for a break so you may jump in with your point. When you hold off on the need to make a point and instead provide your full attention to the speaker, you can process the words and comprehend the message. You will get a deeper understanding and comprehension, allowing you to respond more effectively.
2. Reduce distractions such as working on a project or being on a device or computer. Be present so the complete message is received.
3. Focus on the message and not the delivery. It can be normal for many to judge others, take the time to recognize when you are doing this, and work to shift so you are only concerned with the message.
4. Ask questions to clarify and ensure you understand the speaker accurately.
Working to develop these areas can lead to deeper understanding, trust, empathy, and deeper connections with the individuals around you. It can also lead to an environment of open communication that is more authentic. This all takes practice and dedication.
