Every medical student’s journey looks a little different, and for OMS-II Brianne Flores, learning to trust his own path has been an important part of his.

During challenging moments in medical school, SD Flores found that the people around him made a difference. Through the guidance of staff, encouragement from friends and the support systems available to him, he learned that asking for help can be just as important as finding the strength to keep moving forward.

Medical school is hard. There may be a moment when you question yourself, need some reassurance or simply need a shoulder to lean on. Finding the people you feel safe turning to can make all the difference.

“There are people and resources dedicated to helping you get through it.”

Whether you’re already on your medical school journey or just beginning to imagine what yours could look like, find your people. Give yourself the grace to follow your own path, and don’t be afraid to reach out when you need support. As Student Doctor Flores has learned, sometimes finding confidence in the physician you are becoming starts with allowing others to support you along the way.

Earlier this month, members of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA), a student organization at the SHSU Russell & Glenda Gordy College of Osteopathic Medicine, volunteered at the annual Vietnamese Health Fair alongside faculty from the Department of Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP).

Together, student doctors and faculty provided free Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) sessions, sharing hands-on techniques that are central to osteopathic care with attendees.

“This event was especially meaningful as it allowed us to celebrate our cultural heritage while giving back to the community we are proud to represent,” said SD Vivian Hsu.

The event gave our student doctors an opportunity to put their osteopathic training into practice while connecting with and serving others.

For Simon Koch, PhD, computer science and healthcare are increasingly connected—and preparing students to work across both is an exciting opportunity.

With a background in artificial intelligence, data science, biomedical informatics, medical imaging, virtual surgical simulation and high-performance computing, Koch has spent his career exploring how technology can help solve real-world healthcare problems.

Now, as a faculty member in the MABS program, he’s helping students do the same. From biomedical data and digital health to clinical decision support, medical imaging and natural language processing, Koch wants students to gain hands-on experience with the technologies shaping healthcare.

His advice? Be curious, work across disciplines and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Some of the best learning, he says, comes from trying something, reflecting on it and trying again.

Outside of the classroom, Koch enjoys cycling, fishing, spending time with family, exploring emerging technologies and both watching and playing soccer. ⚽

Originally from Argentina, Damian Chiandussi, MD, has a background that spans disciplines, industries and countries.

Before medicine, Chiandussi studied violin at the National Conservatory of Music and later pursued advanced studies in philosophy. He went on to earn his medical degree and train in internal medicine. In 2017, he moved to the U.S., where his work has included extensive experience in clinical research.

His research experience spans HIV and infectious disease, COVID-19 treatment and vaccine studies, diabetes, cancer, medical devices and emerging technologies—including work at Baylor College of Medicine on cancer research in the U.S. and South America.

Today, Chiandussi brings that breadth of experience directly to MABS students. Having seen research from private, industry, government and academic perspectives, he can help students understand how research takes shape in different settings and where their own interests might lead.

As he teaches Regulatory Affairs, Chiandussi wants students to know he is there as a resource—ready to share what he has learned, help them explore research and learn alongside them.

Outside of the classroom, you can find Chiandussi enjoying another one of his interests: baseball. ⚾
