100% pass rate. Continued excellence.

The SHSU-COM Class of 2025 was one of only four medical schools in the nation to achieve a 100% pass rate on the COMLEX-USA Level 3 national board exam, proving once again that this class—and SHSU-COM alumni as a whole—are truly exceptional.

This achievement is yet another example of Bearkat doctors upholding the highest standards of osteopathic medicine and making an impact across Texas and beyond.

Congratulations, Class of 2025, on this incredible accomplishment!

Student Doctor Tiago McDown recently presented the research poster, “Inspiratory Muscle Training with the O2 Trainer: A Pilot Study,” at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting. The project was completed in collaboration with Dr. Patrick Davis.

When asked what advice he would give to students beginning medical school, SD McDown reflected on the importance of maintaining perspective throughout the journey:

“Do NOT let medical school become your entire identity. The people and the reasons that brought you here are the same ones that will get you through it. I'm a husband, a father, a son, and a friend before I'm a medical student or a future physician. Keeping that perspective hasn't always been easy, but returning to it has carried me through some of the hardest stretches of training.”

Congratulations to SD McDown on his research presentation and for sharing a meaningful reminder about the importance of staying connected to the people and values that matter most.

SHSU-COM is expanding opportunities for innovation, collaboration and discovery in healthcare.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved the creation of the Department of Biomedical & Digital Health Intelligence in Clinical Systems (BioMedics), which will officially launch on Sept. 1, 2026. The department will be chaired by Vinoth Sittaramane, PhD, DVM.

BioMedics will support the ethical integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare, serve as the home of the SHSU-COM Institute for Medical Artificial Intelligence and provide core faculty support for the proposed Master of Applied Biomedical Sciences program.

“Through the BioMedics Department, we are building a collaborative environment where students, residents and faculty can work across disciplines to develop innovative solutions that improve healthcare access, efficiency and patient outcomes,” said Dr. Sittaramane.

Supporting AI training in residency programs.

SHSU-COM has been awarded a $25,000 Innovations in Graduate Medical Education Development Grant from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) to launch AI Across Residency.

Based at SHSU-COM and implemented through residency programs within the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC), the initiative will help train resident physicians to thoughtfully and responsibly integrate artificial intelligence into clinical practice while keeping patient care at the center.

Through collaboration with SHSU-COM's Medical Artificial Intelligence Institute, the program will prepare future physicians to leverage emerging technologies to improve care, increase access and better serve the communities where they practice.

DO Day of Service is a national initiative observed by osteopathic medical schools across the country, but at SHSU-COM, our students dedicate an entire week to serving the community through meaningful outreach and volunteer efforts.

Throughout DO Week of Service, students hosted food and clothing drives, participated in mobile health clinics, supported the local unhoused population, mentored undergraduate students, volunteered at Conroe KidzFest, and partnered with local Girl Scouts to provide health education and mentorship opportunities.

Together, SHSU-COM students contributed more than 15,000 service hours this year, reflecting our continued commitment to service, compassion, and community engagement.

A special shoutout to student doctor Meredith Poling for completing nearly 300 service hours this year — an incredible accomplishment!
