Day 5 of our trip (June 9, 2019):
Ste. Mere Eglise, where the 82nd and 101st Abn Divisions jumped, flew, landed in the early hours of June 6, 1944. This was the 1st town liberated on the Western Front. We are enjoying a re-enactment festival.

On Sunday June 9, our travelers will visit 44 gravesites of our Youngstown boys buried in Normandy. Each student has been assigned a soldier to research. After telling us his story our student will leave the (bigger) piece of our commemorative coin at the grave and bring the other piece back home to Youngstown.

Thank you Joe & Charlie (SRHS '18) Staffeld of ALBCO for creating and donating 100 coins free of charge in less than 2 weeks time.

Largest D-Day re-enactment in the United States. Great celebration.
The "invasion" lasted an hour and included airplane strafing runs, artillery and tank firings, automatic weapons, and of course troops coming ashore assaulting the beach defenses.

Some of our travelers learning about Genealogical research in preparation for our trip from the Local History & Genealogy librarian of the Mahoning County Public Library, Tim Seman.

We learned about Cpl. Kenneth L. Shearer.
Kenneth was born in 1915 and lived with his sister Anna at his grandparents house in Mahoning County. He attended Austintown Fitch High School and he enlisted in the army in 1942. Kenneth was assigned to the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division and jumped into Normandy during the early hours of DDAY. Kenneth got wounded on July 7, 1944 near La Haye du Puits, France and died of his wounds two days later. He is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery. The newspaper article is from the Youngstown Vindicator dated Aug 6, 1944, and lists him as wounded. Youngstown Raised. At Rest in Normandy.

Cpl. Shearer is one of the 44 Youngstown Boys that our student travelers will discover and honor in the next 300 days of their journey.
